Starting an internet marketing business can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. Firstly, you need guidance. Now this can obtained through various means. There are numerous packages that are being sold. Some which are extremely valuable in content, others which frankly are written purely to line the author's pockets.

So how do you differentiate between the two?

It's simple. Spend some time doing some research. You can obtain some very good and FREE information just by going to your search eng
ne and typing in what you are looking for. You will need to allot a fair bit of time to this, but if you are on a budget, this is the wisest way to find your way around the internet. There are many article sites, forums and newsletter sites to browse and you'll find that one piece of information will lead to another. You'll be amazed at just what you can learn.

Once you are savvier with what's involved I would advise you to invest some money in your own personal development. If you decide to be guided by someone of experience and want to buy their information, don't jump straight in, go and join internet forums and seek advice there. Reviews are done regularly on different products and this is an excellent way in choosing the right product for your needs.

So where do you start?

There are basically 3 steps that you will need to follow to get started.

Step 1. Become an affiliate. Affiliate marketing is selling someone else's product for them. There are several benefits to marketing this way.

  1. You don't need to buy, or produce your own product.
  2. You don't need to handle the shipping of the product.
  3. You don't need to deal with any money transfers.
  4. You get paid very healthy commissions on a regular basis for selling the product.

There are many affiliate sites that are FREE to join and will connect you with a product you are interested in selling. It is really easy to do and you can get started straight away.

Step 2. Get your name out there!

There are a number of reasons why you need to start getting known. Building a relationship with the public is paramount. It's not enough that you have a good product to sell. The most important factor in this business is trust. To get the customer on your side and set you apart from the thousands of other people doing the same as you is to gain their trust. If people trust YOU they will buy from YOU!

How do you do this?

Well you have to take the softly softly approach. Give them good and honest information about your product. Don't try the hard sell. Yes, you may strike lucky a few times through the law of averages, but as a rule of thumb, people don't like to feel that they are being bullied.

The best and cheapest way to get known is to post articles on specialist article sites. These are totally FREE and an unbelievable way of spreading your word virally. Webmasters look on them for good content to put on their sites. Once posted on their sites, you have the benefit of search engines picking up your links, (which if you had to pay per click for you own ad, could cost you huge amounts of money!) and all of this is totally FREE!

Step 3. Create a campaign to establish a relationship with your generated leads.

The leads generated via your article are genuinely interested in what you have to offer. They have read your article and want to find out more. This is your opportunity to start building a relationship with them by sending them a series of friendly helpful emails. By applying this technique, you will be gaining their confidence in you, therefore rocketing your chances of making a sale. After all, we all like to buy from someone we like!

The techniques that I just talked about are great for getting a lot of people to sign up for your list, but there is a better method. The method I'm talking about is selling your own product. You simple set up a page where they are redirected to after they make a purchase.

On this page is your sign up forum. Simply say that in order to get the product that they bought, simply leave your name and e-mail address. Just make sure to give them an option to get your product without signing up for your list.

It's really unethi
al not to give people that option. They bought your product, but they still must be able to get your product without signing up for your list. Some people are repeat customers and they are already signed up for your list. For more details www.confessions-followup-marketing.com They need a way to buy and not sign up for the list again, an error will come up if they give you the same e-mail address twice. Now on to the reasons why this is the best method to use to build a mailing list. One is that you're making money selling your product, while building your list. Some people don't like to put in the time to build a list because they get sick of writing all these free products and giving them away, in order to, build their list. Everyone needs to support themselves while they are building their list.

Another reason and probably the most important reason is the quality of the list that you build with this technique. It doesn't do any good to have a huge list of people that won't buy from you. You can boast a 10,000 person list, but if you only get a hand full of sales from it, it doesn't matter how big it is. Building list this way ensures you that you have some buyers on your hands, not just freebie seekers. More importantly, you have people that have bought from you in the past and will probably buy from you in the future. Repeat business is hugely important to anyone that wants to be successful selling their own products.

Another reason why it's so good is because if you create your own products, you're going to sell them anyways. Why not kill two birds with one stone? For more details www.craigs-list-profits.com You can sell and build your list at the same time with no extra effort given to build your list. The quality of the product and the price are going to be vitally important. Let me first say that whatever you price your products at, always give them this option to sign up to your list.

The best thing to do is create this great product and sales page. Then completely over-deliver, remember that you're building a list and if you over-deliver it's going to really pay off in the long-run.

You must always look to the future and keep the end result in mind at all times. They are going to be much more willing to buy from you over and over again in the future. I've had customers tell me that they will buy anything that I release. I have always provided great products and great value to my customers and they certainly remember your name and products the next time you release one.

Search engine optimization sounds so daunting for most young companies. Who has time for dealing with metatags and keyword density when you're trying to get a company off the ground? Below is a simple list of five things you can easily do to improve your visibility on search engines.

1. You can afford free. Index your site with the Open Directory Project. It's free! The Open Directory Project powers core directory services for Google, Lycos, AOL Search, Netscape Search, and lots more.

2. Know thyself
hrough thy customers' eyes. Remember that the words you use to describe your company are not necessarily the same ones that a prospect might use. Sometimes you need to go with the masses when it comes to keywords. Review your keyword list (if you have one), and see if your prospects would even think to search for them. You might even want to (gasp!) ask your customers about what keywords they use.

3. Stay on the up-and-up. Don't cram your keyword tag with dozens of keywords or repeating keywords. It doesn't work. Use 10 to 12 good, applicable keywords.

4. Put it in the Flash can. Don't let your web designer talk you into a Flash intro. Not only will everyone skip it because it's annoying and doesn't provide much in terms of information, it will stop the search engine spiders that crawl your site dead in their tracks.

5. Be more than a welcome mat. Develop unique titles for each of your pages. These titles appear at the top of the web browser window when your prospects or potential investors check out your site. So please, don't use, "Welcome to XYZ Company." This tells them nothing of value, except maybe that you have manners. Use the title to tell what you do, what problem you solve, and/or what the particular page is about. We're only talking about a handful of words per page (10 max), so it's not as painful as it might sound.

If you sell downloadable products (via ClickBank, PayPal, etc.), you need to be sure that no-one can access those products unless they've paid for them.
It's no secret that there are many people out there who will try to get to your download pages without paying for your product or, worse again, will make your download links available for free to others.

So what can you do to prevent this from happening?

Here are a few tips that won't provide 100% protection, but will ensure that the majority of users will not
be able to easily access and steal your products.

1. NAMING YOUR DOWNLOAD PAGE

If you name your download page something like 'thankyou.html' or 'download.html' then it's a pretty simple process for the average hacker to locate your page and download your product. Give your download pages a complicated name that is neither easy to guess, easy to remember nor easy to recognize.

2. CREATE 'NESTED' DIRECTORIES

In keeping with point number 1, this is just a question of making it more difficult for the average hacker to find your download pages.

Let's say you're selling an ebook called "How to Make Your Hamster Happy". Now, let's say you're selling it at this URL: http://www.yourdomainname.com/happyhamster.

In this example, your sales page is contained in the directory called 'happyhamster'.

Now, rather than store your download page in this same directory, you can make life more difficult for the hacker by creating sub-directories (or 'nested' directories) for your download page.

Just create a sub-directory inside 'happyhamster' called, for example, 'srB45n' and another directory inside that one called 'trd12s' (or whatever) and then place your download page inside this directory. In this scenario, your download page would be contained at this, more hidden, address: http://www.yourdomainname.com/happyhamster/srB45n rd12s

Another approach is to place your download page directory in a separate place altogether on your server - thus making it even more difficult for a hacker to track it down.

3. CREATE AN INDEX.HTM PAGE FOR EVERY FOLDER

If you don't have a page called 'index.htm' in the directory that contains your download page, then your host server will display a page listing the contents of that directory.

Here's an example of a directory that doesn't have an 'index.htm' page: http://bizzydays.com/example. As you can see, the contents of the directory are there for all to see (and download).

Your 'index' page can be a regular page from your site or you can make it re-direct the visitor somewhere else. You can see this idea in action by visiting http://bizzydays.com/free. As you can see, when you try to access that directory, you're immediately re-directed to the BizzyDays.com home page.

To create your own re-direct page, simply paste the following HTML code into Windows Notepad (or your web-editing software) and save it as 'index.htm' or 'index.html'. Now upload it to the folder you wish to protect.

<.html>
<.head>
<.meta HTTP-EQUIV="refresh"
content="0;URL=FULL_ADDRESS _HERE">
<.meta name="robots" content="noindex">
<.title>
<./head>
<.body>
<./body>
<./html>

NOTE: I've placed dots (.) after the "<" in all the lines above. This is to ensure that the code shows up properly here. When using this on your web page, remove those dots. NOTE: Be sure to replace the URL with the address you want to re-direct the visitor to.

4. HIDE YOUR DOWNLOAD PAGES FROM THE SEARCH ENGINES

It's amazing how many download pages you'll find via the search engines if you put your mind to it. In fact, one search I just ran on Google turned up two download pages on the first page of results (albeit both from the same website).

To get around this, you need to ensure that the search engines do not include your download pages in their index.

To do this, just place the following snippet of code between the <.head> and <./head> tags at the top of your download page's HTML...(again, remove the dot)

<.meta name="robots" content="nofollow,noindex">

5. PROTECT YOUR PAYPAL ORDER BUTTONS

PayPal is a great service but it has a gaping security hole that affects anyone selling downloadable products.

When you sell via PayPal, even the most amateur of hackers can find out the location of your download page just by looking at the HTML code on your sales page.

One way around this is to use HTML encryption software to render the HTML of your sales page un-readable. While this will stop the majority of hackers, the more determined ones will probably be able to crack the code.

Another approach is to use specialized software like 'PayLock Generator' (http://bizzydays.com/paypal) which creates highly encrypted PayPal order buttons that are very difficult to crack.

6. CHANGE YOUR DOWNLOAD LINKS OFTEN

This one is pretty self-explanatory. If you've followed the steps outlined above, then you've gone some way towards protecting your digital products. It's not 100% protection, however, which is why I recommend changing your download links regularly. This will help ensure that, if someone does manage to access your products, and has been leaving your download links on forums or whatever, then you'll be able to cut them off.

7. PUT A STATEMENT ON YOUR EBOOK

If someone is giving your ebook away for free, it's not a given that everyone who downloads it will be as dishonest as the one giving it away. It's a good idea to place a prominent statement inside your ebook explaining that it's not a free ebook. Ask readers to contact you if they received the ebook for free explaining where they downloaded it. You might consider offering a small 'reward' for taking the time to contact you.

Okay, those are the basic steps you can (and should) take to protect your downloads. If you're worried that this isn't enough, then you'll find some additional resources below that really go the extra mile. (I use these myself so I can testify to their worth).

Just one final point... after you make the changes outlined above, be sure to double-check everything is working okay.

it is important that you periodically check to see if your products or services are easy to access and buy. If they aren't, it could mean that your website is not effective enough, and that it is time to think of a website redesign.

It is quite obvious for an online businessperson to have a website and internet presence to succeed in the business. However, it is important that you periodically check to see if your products or services are easy to access and buy. If they aren't, it could mean that your website is not effective enough, and that it is time to think of a website redesign.

If you have a business where your site has increased in size considerably over the years, you have to find out if the website still meets your needs. The addition of information to the site means you have to consider redesigning of the website for re-organization of data, and perhaps elimination of some information. Sometimes, you may also need to add some multimedia information like audio and video to help improve the effect of your message.

Improved site navigation

Another reason for a website redesign is ineffective site navigation. Sometimes as you add content to the pages, you find that the important information of the site lands up buried in the site and difficult for a surfer to access. With redesigned website, you can arrange website content systematically so that surfers have no problem reaching your content.

If your site requires the latest content on the site, you may have to make a website redesign to get rid of outdated data. You may have to revise spec sheets, change all promotional dates and if required, add some new material every week. Remember that a static looking website creates the impression that you are not serious about your business.

Remember that a well made website design gives any business a corporate identity in the business world. So if you have added new products or have changed the focus of your services, you will have to go into a website redesign to get a new home page design. Only then will you be able to get the depth and breadth of your current business across to your customers.

Use of better technology in the website redesign

Computer technology is changing and improving every other month. So if you had created your website 1-2 years ago, you will most likely need a technology update for your website. This is possible through a website redesign, especially if you had started your website using a very basic site with hard coding of everything.

Whatever the reason for your website redesign, it is better to go into a redesign by doing some prior research. You will have to get some information about the needs and demands of target audience through usability tests, feedback from visitors and online surveys. This way, you will be able to get ideas for a better website redesigning.

Remember that though you will be redesigning your website, don't just scrape away the old website. Keep the old design as a backup folder to be loaded in case the new design fails to generate website traffic. With these thoughts in mind, you may as well have a website redesign done to generate increased traffic and better business for your online business.

Have you fallen prey to one or more perverted predators, selling you their latest "get rich quick" scam? Do you want to learn how to avoid that very unpleasant experience?

Overview

Why are we vulnerable to Internet scam-artists? The numbers of Internet users are increasing dramatically, and this incredible growth attracts all types, including scam-artists. It is imperative that you learn to protect yourself.

It boggles the mind the number
of people that are now using the internet. As of January 2008, according to Internet World Stats, there are over 1.4 billion Internet world users and over 246 million of them are in North America.

During the last 8 years, the numbers of users has grown by 127.9% in North America and by 290% in the world. The present numbers of users only make up 21% of the world population.

Can you imagine what lies ahead?

What Are Scam-Artists

With this tremendous internet user growth, of course, summons both the good and the evil. Unfortunately, scam-artists have wormed their way into the internet. You may have even fallen prey to one or more of these perverted predators, selling you their latest "get rich quick" scam.

The dictionary's definition of scam is "a ploy by a shyster to raise money, a fraudulent business scheme, deprive by deceit".

In the Internet world, the word scam-artist to me is best described as one who attempts to intentionally mislead a person or persons into buying a worthless product for the sole purpose of taking their limited supply of money.

Elie Wiesel said, "There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest".  We must protest against those who deceive us.

How To Protect Your Self From Scam-Artists

To identify a reputable website operated by an honorable owner/merchant, your undivided attention is required.

Remember the old adage - Do not Judge the Book by Its Cover.  Well, it applies when you are selecting a merchant.  You need to judge the website, judge the company behind the website and listen to your feelings and impressions operating at your subconscious level.

Secrets Of A Reputable Website

To judge the website, you ask yourself does the website look professional. To make this determination, you look for the following:

  • Does the website format to your screen;
  • Does it redirect to another website;
  • Does it take to long to load;
  • Does it have an intro before the real page;
  • Does it have auto play videos without closer;
  • Does it consist of only test pages;
  • Does it show loading bars;
  • Does it show very uninformative text;
  • Does it show mostly ads on top;
  • Does it include sound without closer;
  • Does it contain broken links;
  • Does it have spelling and grammatical errors;
  • Is it not easy to navigate;
  • Does it have unorganized pages;
  • It does not state price until ordering;
  • The ordering is not quick and efficient.

If the website has, any of the above, then by now your elevated antennae should be resonating.

What Is Hidden Behind A Reputable Website

The second part of the equation is to obtain a sense of who is selling you the product. A short description of the person and a photo is helpful.

If it is a company, then a link to "About Us" is very useful especially if it provides history and who is involved in the company. To acquire a better sense of what is behind the site, gather the following:

  • Look on the website for one or more of the logos issued after submission and close scrutiny of the site by Truste, BBonline.com and Better-Internet-Bureau;
  • Make sure there is a privacy policy; read it and determine if it is vague or indecisive;
  • If user information is required, does the policy state exactly how your information is going to be used and will the forth coming email from the owner or merchant have an opt-out mechanism;
  • Make sure there is an owner or merchant's contact page. Does this page provide the merchants address, email and phone number;
  • Search for an unbiased reviews. Do not just rely on testimonials. Best place to obtain 3rd party review is to check latest reviews on forums. If you are dealing with a company and not an individual, check the BBB (Better Business Bureau);
  • See if the product owner offers a fact page (FAQ). Is the fact page helpful;
  • Send an email and see how long it takes the owner to respond or does the owner respond at all;
  • Ask the owner how often the product is updated and if future updates are free;
  • If the product is digital, check the products owners' status on ClickBank and if is not digital, check the owner's status on Commission Junction.

How To Listen To Your Inner Self

The third part of the equation is to listen to your inner self. To listen to you feelings and impressions operating at your subconscious level, you need to ignore the constant analyzing, rationalizing and out right arguing your conscious mind does to stop you from relying on your inner voice.

Dr. Martin Luther King Junior said, "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole stair case, just the first step". Your first step of faith is listening to your inner self.

Dr. Ronald C. Bissel of Self Growth says that each time you listen to the wisdom of your voice, you are given new insight and are taken deeper into the spiritual aspects of your consciousness. Your inner voice creates a connection with your Creator that transcends our physical world. Understanding its value in your life will lead you into a deep level of trust.

How does this apply to buying a product from a reputable website? Your first impression of a Sales Page should not be your only guiding light. It may have the right colors, say all the right things and have great testimonials, but before you buy, be a diligent shopper.

Just to reiterate. Conduct an intensive observation on how the website looks, how organized is it and is the website functional and efficient. Then investigate as to what is behind the website. How reputable is the merchant and what do third party opinions say about the product and merchant. Then, of course, listen to your inner voice. Remember, your money matters, so be prudent purchasers.

Tom Panelas is the Director of Corporate Communications of the Encyclopaedia Britannica

Q: Would you agree that the Britannica and the Encarta cater to different market segments and that the Britannica provides more in-depth coverage of its topics while the Encarta is a more complete, PC-orientated reference experience? If so, what is the market positioning of the Britannica's Elementary and Student Encyclopedias?

TP: The most important thing about Britannica's Ultimate Reference Suit
is that is has three encyclopedias -- one for every reading level - and therefore can be used profitably by the whole family. So, yes, the Encyclopaedia Britannica itself is the more comprehensive encyclopedia, but realize also that the Ultimate Reference Suite also has Britannica Student Encyclopedia, created for the same age range as Encarta, and Britannica Elementary Encyclopedia, for younger readers.
So our positioning is that Britannica serves you from grade school to graduate school and beyond.

Q: Both encyclopedias offer an embarrassment of riches. Users find the wealth and breadth of information daunting and data mining is fast becoming an art form. Encarta introduced the Visual (Virtual) Browser and Britannica introduced the BrainStormer to cope with this predicament. Are there any improvements - or alternative solutions - planned in future editions?

TP: The 2006 edition will include search enhancements to BrainStormer. They're under development right now, so I don't have too many details. We also have some unique indexing systems that underlie the structure of the Britannica database, which our indexers have been at work on for years. We expect these to be the basis of some powerful search and
browse applications in the years ahead.

Q: How does your product strike a balance between browsing and research? Is one activity encouraged over the other?

TP: Most people like to do keyword searching, so we try to keep that working sharply, but we have also tried to introduce as many other ways to access information as possible, such as subject browse, index browse, atlas, timelines, and BrainStormer. People have different learning styles and different preferences for how to find information. We try to indulge all of them.

Q: The Encarta and the Britannica offer competing models for interacting with the Internet. Both offer updates - the Encarta weekly or bi-weekly and the Britannica 2-4 times a year. Both provide additional and timely content and revisions on dedicated Web sites. But the Encarta conditions some of its functions - notably its research tools and updates - on registration with its Plus Club. The Britannica doesn't. Are you considering a change in your approach?

TP: We're not.

Q: The Encarta incorporates numerous third-party texts and visuals (including dozens of Discovery Channel videos, hundreds of newspaper articles, and a plethora of Scientific American features). The Encarta's multimedia offerings are also impressive with thousands of video and audio clips, maps, tables, and animations. The Britannica provides considerably more text. Is the Britannica planning to follow suit or will it remain mainly text based?

TP: Well, I wouldn't say we're "mainly" text based - we have added a lot of multimedia over the years, and we've won some awards for our multimedia - but we will continue to offer comprehensive information for all ages. When you come down to it, the information that really matters in reference works is words. We'll continue to add multimedia as well, space permitting, but covering a topic thoroughly and properly comes first.

Q: Will the Encarta/Britannica integrate with new desktop search tools from Google, Microsoft, and others?

TP: Yes, that's a priority for 2006.

Q: In the editorial process, how do you cope with contemporary and recent developments, minority-sensitive issues, and controversial topics (such as abortion and gay rights)?

TP: This question calls for a treatise of its own. We have advisers all over the world consisting of the top scholars and experts in all fields, and with their help we try to bring reason and evidence to bear on developing the best approximation of truth that is humanly possible. Yes, it's hard work, because people disagree on many things, but it can be done reasonably well if you're determined. We strive to the extent possible for coverage that are universal - that is, it takes all major perspectives around the world into account and does not favor one "civilization" over another. One thing we insist on in all of our encyclopedias, regardless of language or what country they are published in, and that is that coverage of a topic be consistent everywhere. Like our eighteenth-century forebears, we believe that there is such a thing as truth and it is possible for humans to know it. Creating an encyclopedia is one of the ways humans do that. So we don't have different "truths," plural, for different countries or markets. We don't pander to local sensitivities or myths by covering a topic one way in one country and a different way in another.

Q: What features cater to the needs of challenged users, such as the visually-impaired?

TP: Most of the navigational features for which most people use the mouse have keyboard equivalents. We plan to do more in this area. We have concentrated in recent years on making our school and library products compliant with the U.S. Americans With Disabilities Act because the demand for this in that area is so strong. We are now turning to doing similar things with our consumer products.

Q: The atlas, dictionary, and thesaurus incorporated in both products are outdated. Why not use a more current - and dynamically updated - offering? What about dictionaries for specialty terms (medical or computer glossaries, for instance)?

TP: Sam, Can you give me examples of outdated dictionary information? We haven't seen much demand from our customers in specialized dictionaries.

Q: Both encyclopedias consume (not to say) hog computer resource far in excess of the official specifications. This makes them less suitable for installation on older PCs and on many laptops. The Mackintosh interfaces are also clunky. How can and will these limitations be tackled?

TP: We plan to improve speed and performance in 2006, especially for Mac, since we seem to be the only ones these days with a Mac version.

Have you ever been a victim of a virus attack? I have. Several times infact. I'll try to explain a way to spot these kind of computer diseases. Maybe is your computer running slow, or it seems to be loosing files or folders, or you happen to notice that your personal settings for your programs change without your help. Maybe you don't think much over it, and just correct them to what you like them to be. Well, you could be pretty sure that these settings doesn't change themselves.

So, if you didn't change them,
hen somebody else did. Or a virus. A little piece of software has sneaked in through your computers backdoor, and begins to follow the exact instructions its creator(s) gave it. In some cases it could be to make trouble for you by deleting files you might need sometime in the near future. Your system could work properly, without any errors and you won't even notice that anything is wrong with your computer. But one day you get repeated error messages, or you experience problems to run certain programs you use. Or you maybe you notice that you have lost documents or other files that you use, and you are 100% possitive that you did not delete or move them. This is when you could be atleast 99% sure that someone, or something is disturbing your system. In most cases this happens to be a computer disease in form of a virus infection.

Therefore it is very important to protect yourself and your system against viruses. I bet you don't want your work to take the triple amount of time because your computer is running slow, or to even disappear entirely from the face of the earth. A good thing to practice when you use your computer as a workstation is to take backups of your work. And I must urge you to store files or folders on a separate disk in addition to your main drive. (For example you save your work to your computers harddrive, and then burn it over to a cd, or copy it to a flash disk. In the case of a virus infection you could atleast be able to save your work if your computer is wasted. So, remember backup.

This brings us over to another aspect of viruses. That is about the highly destructive ones. Most of them are stopped by anti virus software before they gets to spread too much. But some of them are really tricky and surprises a huge number of users and systems before it is taken care of. The companies that develop anti virus software always have to look for new viruses, because hundreds and even thousands of new ones are created every day. Every minute someone on this planet are focusing their energy on one thing. Guess what.

?! The making of a new disease they can spread around the globe. This is why I ask the question; Is viruses pure fun or pure evil?My personal guess is: None of the above. I think there is a combination of the really old part of mankinds mentality that is to fight or cause troubleif we are pissed about something, and the creative minds that construct these sicknesses to make trouble for most people possible. They get the feeling of having the upper hand, and that they have done some damage. The only problem for them is that virus creators won't see the despair in your eyes when you realize that you have lost your latest week of work because of their creating. The only thing they can do is to monitor the global expand of the infection, and look at statistics on number of infections, computer crashes and so on. But mostly I think they are just having a really good time just by knowing that a lot of people are suffering huge losses after they did a "good job", because this was their intend in the first place. To conclude this little article I feel that I have to explain to you once more the importance of a proper anti virus solution installed on your system, backups of the things you care about, and that you know that some viruses are a joke, but some will really cause you serious trouble. By visiting the website link below you will find more useful information about viruses, and other threats that exists online. There are also a collection of quality protection software at very reasonable prices.

A paid survey is a great way to move out of the corporate world and into a home based business.  Many advantages come along with choosing to do this type of work.

Work at home

Turning in a paid survey from your home and getting a check or other monetary compensation from your completed work seems like a very profitable way to work at home.  You reduce or eliminate many of the expenses associated with going off to work each day to an office or factory job and the work can be quite easy to ac
omplish.  There is no special training or educational level required to do the work.  You can do as many or as few of the income producing surveys as you wish. You don't need to dress up for the work unless you want to do so.

Work in your spare time

When you work at a paid survey, you don't have to work more than a few hours per week in order to make a good living.  Just pick out a few of the surveys each day to complete prior to your commute or after the kids are in bed for the night and you will add much needed income to your monthly revenue.  If you just want to add income to the household budget for a stay-at-home parent, this type of income is a great answer for many people.

Work full time and schedule your hours

Whether you work full time or part time doing a paid survey job at home, you have the option of working only when you want to do so.  You don't have to be on the job at 8 am each morning, and are not required to fight the 5 pm commuter traffic in order to get home each evening. Actually, a full time job can usually be accomplished in just a few hours each day.  You can hit the surveys hard during the first two or three days each week and enjoy weekends that begin on Thursday each week.

Earn good income

The income you receive from a paid survey will vary according to the type of survey, the company that is commissioning the questionnaire and the length of time that is required to answer the questions. It is not unusual to receive $3 to $5 per survey.  Longer panel studies requiring more time can pay $75 for your time. Sometimes surveys are paid in products or product coupons that you can redeem either through the mail or at a local merchant.  Another way to get paid for completed surveys is through the accumulation of points at a clearinghouse site that offers some nice payouts for points

No financial investment required

When you elect to do a paid survey, it's not like other work at home opportunities--there is no fee charged up front for you to receive your survey.  Instead, it's a straight trade, your time for cash or products.  You won't have to pay for special equipment or supplies--all the information and activity takes place online.  If you have a computer with internet access, you can do this type of work easily.  You can be started within a few minutes after making the decision to begin work.

Everybody has their top tips for whatever it is they're into. For me, it's Internet marketing. I've been doing this for almost five years and during that time I have discovered that there are certain things that are absolutely critical to successful Internet marketing. Without these three things, you have almost no chance for any real success. So if you want to discover my personal ABCs, keep reading. They are absolutely the top of MY list...and should be at the top of YOURS.
A - Advertising. I have been telling this to mark
ters for years on end. Some get it, some don't. So let me give you the Readers Digest bottom line. You can have the greatest product in the world. It could even be a cure for cancer. If nobody knows about it, guess what? Nobody is going to see it. For more details www.podcasting-made-easy.com.And unless you advertise, nobody WILL know about it. Now, there are many forms of advertising online, but without a doubt the most effective forms are article marketing and forum participation. These mediums will get the word out faster than just about anything else. Advertise or perish.
B - Business Plan. If you want to really take your Internet marketing to the next level, you must have a plan. Sure, you could wing it if you like. But trust me on this, winging it is going to make you nickels and dimes at best. Those who come up with a solid business plan are the ones who are the most successful. For more details www.squeeze-page-profits.com.What's a solid business plan? For starters, you need to map out what you plan to do from beginning all the way to the final step. That includes what you're going to create or promote, how you're going to promote it, how you're going to follow up and so on. There are experts in the area of developing a business plan. Find one. Make a plan. You'll thank me for doing it.
C - Communication. Like it or not, this whole business comes down to communication. Your sales copy, your email ads, you autoresponder followups, even your support emails to and from customers. If you can't effectively communicate with people, you're going to have a very hard time selling to them. Developing killer writing skills does take time, but if you put in the effort, you'll find that it will reward you many times over.

Whether your planning a link campaign or looking after your own web site, link building has always been one of the most important aspects of SEO. Gareth Davies offers another Seven Red Hot Tips for Linking to help you get the most from your link campaign.

1. Vary the keywords in your link 'anchor' text

Unless you provide only one product or service the chances are you will want to rank for many key phrases. One way to help achieve this objective is to change the link text you want all new sit
s to use periodically. Vary the anchor text slightly each time and by doing so you can cover more of your targeted key phrases. This approach can help your site rank for many keywords rather than just one or two.

If you do only provide one product or service on your web site it is still important to vary anchor text. If you sell 'blue widgets' then you could also use link text like 'cheap blue widgets' or 'blue widget store'. This means your links take on a more natural feel and are much less likely to be penalised or filtered out by search engines for being 'fake links'.

2. Set up your link information differently - create a link in context

Typically people set up their link information in a very similar way, however you could offer your link information with the hyperlink inside the description instead of at the beginning.

Imagine this is a description about your web site on a partner's link page. Instead of a typical hyperlink followed by a description you could write a sentence describing your web site and then place your descriptive hyperlink inside it.

One reason for doing this is that it reads more naturally and search engines may value the link higher as it reads more like a narrative. Many webmasters will be happy to accept this style even if some do not. To cover yourself offer the link in context as a second option along with your regular link information, that way if some sites can't support the layout you still get your link.

3. Vary where your links point

Try to vary where link partners point to on your site. It's fine to have the majority of links pointing into your home page, however it can be beneficial to have some links pointing to other key pages on your web site as well. Taking this approach balances out your linking and can help raise the profile of more pages on your web site.

4. How to find potential link partners from your competitors

If a web site links to your competitors it may also link to yours, and in order to find these potential link partners you can use search engines. Not so long ago Google was useful for getting a lot of back link information about a site. Recently Google's back link data is a lot less forthcoming and it now tends to show only a tiny percentage of the sites that are linking combined with a lot of internal link data. Whether the few web sites Google shows us are the ones it finds important or whether they are in fact red herrings we cannot say for certain. I would assume the latter.

Currently Yahoo is a better portal to check for backlinks. To generate a list of linking web sites on Yahoo simply go to http://www.yahoo.com and type the following into the Yahoo search bar.

linkdomain:www.mycompetitorwebsite.com

This will deliver up to date link information as read by Yahoo. The only downside with the information is that one site may appear many times if it is giving multiple links.

5. Alternate your description text

This is often overlooked, but there is no real advantage to be had if the description text supporting your inbound links is always identical. To avoid the possibility of a description ever being seen as 'duplicate content' alternate it when you can. If you combine it with varied anchor text [as in tip 1] you're heading in the right direction.

6. Link to good related content from your web site

It seems like an obvious thing to say, but with so many people caught up in link exchanging you sometimes wonder if we're losing site of the basics. If you have something useful to say on your site and can back it up with a useful link to another web site then do so. Not every link has to be reciprocated. This resourceful linking will allow your visitors to read around the subject. Linking to informative related content is useful for visitors and search engines quite like it too.

7. Seek out directory links

Links from good web directories can be some of the best links you can get for your web site. Aaron Wall has a 'directory of directories' at http://www.directoryarchives.com where you will find a great selection of search engine friendly directories. Some of the directories are free to get listed in whilst others may charge a fee.

How are your customers finding you? Do you advertise locally? Are you on the internet? Are you listed in the phone book? Or do you just keep your fingers crossed hoping someone will walk by your storefront, realize they need your product and stop in for a sale? If you are like many companies today, you rely on the internet as a secondary contact point for your customers to find you - but how do you know they are looking for you? Do they know where to look?

As a seasoned marketer and a certified Search Engine Optimization and Internet M
rketing Expert, I have learned and experienced the benefits of knowing how to properly and effectively benefit from positioning my products and services on the internet. Experiencing what a "human" salesperson can do for me and seeing what having my website perform as a 24-7-365 sales person, I have significantly experience the growth in my bottom line sales and have quickly realized that positioning my website to be effective is Much more cost effective than building a team of "human" droids to peddle my products and services. If you want to quickly increase your sales and your overall net bottom line you will really benefit from reading this introduction article on why and how you and your business can optimize your business potential by properly positioning your products and services on the internet.

Generally, when a customer searches on the internet for a product - they search the product category - not the business name (unless they have previously come into contact with the name of your business). Or they may know your business name, but maybe your website URL is different. Are you a .com, a .ca or a.net? The process of search engine optimization can help you to increase traffic to your website on general topic searches through the use of effective keywords. Although, the topic of search engine optimization can be complex there is a certain process you can follow to help you preparing your website to getting on the right track for optimal optimization!!! Are you ready to optimize your business potential? Follow these three easy steps: Site review, keyword search, and competitor search.

For website review, you simply review the site map of your website. What are the contents that you have on your website and the relevancy to your business? Remember that you stand a better chance increasing your page ranking by providing search engines with good quality content - so make all your page content count.

Once you are comfortable with the set up of your website - next begin to develop some keywords that you think your customer would type into a search engine to land on your page. This is where you are going to need to get your creative juices flowing. Try to avoid general overused keywords and go for more specific logical choices. For example: don't use the word insurance company when the search results for that keyword phrase are in the millions - try for something more specific and localized, or unique to your product, like Insurance brokers in California.

Lastly, whichever keywords or phrases you decide to implement in your web pages, you should always do a competitive search on the words you are using. If over a million websites contain the same phrase you risk getting lost and if your listed on search result page 22... chances are your potential customer has found another website. Also, research which pages are coming up in the results - take a few minutes and look at the top 8-10 results in a search and see if you can identify what these companies strategies were. Maybe they've used search engine optimization, but then again... maybe they didn't and it's just luck or another factor for their placement in the search results.

Optimize your business potential is not as easy as it may seem. Of course, these three steps are just the beginning to the process of Search Engine Optimization. And even these steps have steps within them. The process of search engine optimization can begin to get overwhelming if you are not familiar with the strategies of effective optimization. But when you get stuck, you can always look into a certified search engine optimization service (you'll know you've found the right one when you search for them and they are the number one search result).

Knowing http://www.mainstreammarketing.ca/SEO-Process how to optimize your business potential using the internet does not have to be a mystery any longer

If you know that you are responsible for your own http://www.mainstreammarketing.ca/search_engine_optimisation success in business then perhaps you are ready to begin your discovery of this invaluable new and effective way of marketing

Both affiliate marketing and network marketing pay people for referring a product or service. What then is the difference between affiliate marketing and network marketing?

The difference is best explained in terms of the way compensation is structured to pay for performance. Because of the many hybrid forms of compensation payments available now on the internet, to a newbie scouting for business opportunities, it is easy to get confused over the many terms and definitions used. In evaluating compensation plans, it is
essential to understand the subtle difference between the two models. Ultimately, you want to understand…which model yields more income?

What is affiliate marketing? Affiliate marketing is usually done online. In its simplest form, affiliate marketers are compensated on a one time transaction only. Unlike products offered in a MLM business, affiliate products are often ones that a customer would only need to purchase one time. Thus, the more the affiliate marketer sell, the more they make. This is quite akin to direct sales albeit made via the internet.

Affiliate marketing has a compensation plan based on performance measures. For instance, if the affiliate marketer is successful in the form of sales, clicks, registrations, etc, he/she gets rewarded. The desired action as a means of compensation is already pre-agreed upon by the affiliate merchant and him/her.

In a short space of time, the affiliate marketing model has also evolved to a 2 level (or in some cases, up to 5 levels) compensation plan. In the popular 2-tier version, for instance, you (as an affiliate of a particular e-book merchant) will earn commission when you sell a book to person A and if person A signs up to be an affiliate and manages to sell to person A1, you get compensated too, in addition to person A.

Let's now go on to talk about what network marketing is. In the network marketing model, the compensation plan works in a similar fashion, except that compensation by the sponsoring company can be paid up to several, several or unlimited levels. The number of levels and restrictions in terms of payout is very much dependent on the arrangement offered. As arrangements can vary from one company to the next, this makes comparisons of the various compensation plans available out there difficult. So be sure to read all the fine print!

At any level, a network marketer has the potential to earn a direct referral fee for directly recommending someone and a leverage fee when one of his/her "downlines" is successful for referring friends to the same network. In the popular binary plan adopted by many network marketing companies, each person in the network has two "legs" or "downlines". If more people get referred to the network, they automatically go below the "legs".

Ongoing customer use is what creates the real residual income in network marketing. The MLM business can generate earnings for a very long time even after the initial years of hard work and investment. With a solid network, residual income is assured at each renewal period of a "downline". If the product or service involved in is one that has to be reordered at each renewal period, income should just keep coming in like clock work.

How does the difference in affiliate marketing and network marketing translate into in terms of building your customer relationships and your earnings power? In the network marketing model, to ensure that your "downlines" renew at each period, you must ensure that you build up a good relationship with them. It is essentially a people-build-people and a leader-build-leader business. The ability to generate huge sums of money is increased exponentially when the network grows. The potential to make huge sums of money is thus greater here if you can employ the efforts of others to help grow the business vis-เ-vis the affiliate marketing model. In affiliate marketing, your earnings ability is limited by your own direct sales plus an additional of 1, 2 or up to 5 levels of leveraging efforts.

Having described the above, it would seem that to maximise your income, it is best to join online network marketing programs as opposed to affiliate programs.

Nope...I don't think that's really the case either.

Affiliate marketing is best described as an entry to online network marketing. Affiliate products are easier to sell, likely to involve one rather than an array of products and therefore, less expensive. For instance, an e-book is likely to have an associated affiliate program while access to a membership site of digital products is more likely to pay for recurrent renewals of membership.

In conclusion, there is always no harm in joining different programs whether affiliate or network marketing ones. Just be sure that you understand how you are paid and channel your efforts accordingly. Afterall, your goal is to build multiple sources of income. You have a choice to represent what or which combination of products/programs work best for yourself.

Have you ever thought of joining an online dating club to look for the love of your life but not so sure if it's for you? I believe in online dating clubs or site and I will tell you why I firmly believe it fits in with our modern day lifestyles. Few years ago online dating was regarded as a myth. Though some people were using the internet as a method of dating, they never discuss it with their friends or colleagues for fear of being reproved.

I remember a friend of mine who was embarrassed to tell me that she had joined an online
dating club. At the time, I was rather surprised at her move because she was an attractive girl who would be considered quite beautiful. However, after discussing with her I later understood why she had decided to try this method of dating; according to her she was just tired of meeting slackers who were only interested in sexual relationship and would not commit to a serious relationship.

However, when she went online, she met so many suitors though she has no desire to date some of the men who contacted her, there were quite a few she was interested in. In the course of her online dating she was able to establish a serious relationship with someone who lived 100s miles away from her. After the initial exchange of mails and photos and several hours of phone conversation, they decided to meet each other. And it was the beginning of a lasting love relationship that ended up in a marriage.

So if you are one of those who are not convinced that online dating works, I have listed 10 reasons why I believe this is the best.

1. With online dating, there are many fishes in the ocean as you have 1000s of partners to choose from.

2. If you are the shy type, you don't need to get dressed up wearing expensive perfume for a night out. You simply put on whatever you feel is comfortable and clean.

3. You can log on at any time of the day to suit your schedule if you work unusual hours. There is always someone online waiting to chat with you.

4. If you start dating someone and you find that they are not what you are seeking for, you can easily terminate subtly and choose another partner.

5. Membership of online dating club offers great opportunity of meeting different people even from different countries whether for friendship or love.

6. If you are single and looking to find a life partner from another location,you don't need to travel out from your location you simply go online and meet other singles who are also searching.

7. With online dating, gives you the time and opportunity to find out more about someone before arranging a date with them which is not so if you had met them in a bar or night club.

8. We now live and date very differently from past generations where the traditional place to meet people was in nightclubs, parties, at work or through friends. By joining an online site you are not excluding these avenues but simply extending your opportunities of meeting someone.

9.With online dating partner, you needn't wait until the weekend to meet your partner, you can always meet online, chatting and talking. Thanks to the power of internet.

10. Finally, a month's subscription costs less than a night out and gives you hundreds of opportunities to meet your perfect partner - every night!

That's exactly the message I feel I am getting every time I visit Dmoz.org to try and list another website into its directory. You visit the site, leave your directory submission (your message), and never hear from them! Yes, it takes a long time to have your website reviewed for submission and it gets you thinking if they are even home in the first place. I have had many questions and complaints about Dmoz and have tried to answer them as correctly as possible. But the common question is "when will they return my call?"
/p>

For those of you who are new to the term "Dmoz", it is the Open Directory Project which is the largest and most comprehensive human edited directory of the web. For your website to be accepted into Dmoz, it has to be reviewed by a human editor. If accepted, then your site is seen as a trusted source by search engines, especially Google. Combined with some SEO work, it will give you that extra boost within the rankings, however the only problem is that the editors take a long time to review the websites.

If you take a look at how many volunteer editors they have (71,816 last time I checked), compared to the number of website submissions they receive (we're talking hundreds and thousands of websites), then obviously it will take a long time for the editors to get around to yours. To add to that, theses editors work for free and each one is assigned to a certain category for reviewing websites. The worst case scenario, you have a new website that has just been submitted to a category with the least number of editors monitoring it, which explains the long waiting time (up to 2 years, if not longer).

When Dmoz first started (1998), it took no longer than 6 weeks to have you website listed into their directories. With demand now running high, the wait is a lot longer and editors are a lot more selective. Never the less, there is no need to get frustrated as there are alternatives to gaining links from a combination of other sources that are just as effective as a link from Dmoz. For instance, you can submit your website to various directories such as Yahoo! and find many other resources on the web on ways to improve your link popularity. If you perform any search and look at the top five websites, you will notice that in most cases these websites do not have a Dmoz listing. This shows that some ethical SEO work and incoming relevant link building will get you those desired ranks.

Having said all that, there is no need to wait for Dmoz to come around. All focus should be diverted on other ways to improve your search engine rankings. If you don't hear from Dmoz, then there is no reason to get frustrated on their lack of efficiency, for your goals can be much easily attained through other sources. On the other hand, if you do hear from Dmoz, take it with a smile and be sure to make good use of their listing with some search engine optimisation for your website.

SEO services and web copywriting goes hand in hand. One is of no use in the absence of other. Apart from writing search engine friendly content, SEO services include various technical subjects, quality inbounds links and other relevant details. However, copywriting is one of the main functions of SEO services since the start of multiple search engines. Without proper content, SEO services is of no use because after all content is the prime factor that is capable of retaining readers interest i
the site. Higher the number of visitors higher is the SEO ranking, which further ensures development of business.

All SEO services revolves around the content and it is often said that “content is king” which is true. The content referred here is not the same content that we write every now and then, but it is a commercially oriented content which is written with business point of view. The uniqueness and ability to provide all the details needed by visitors decide the SEO ranking of the website. SEO services provide all the relevant details required to make your site visible over the net. These SEO services include keywords research, link popularity, and website designing, so on.

Although good content is highly needed to get better SEO ranking, however one should not forget that visitors can only reach your website if SEO services ensure search engine friendly design and navigation to get better links. If there is no link to redirect visitors to your website then there is no point for writing good content as nobody will ever think that your site had existed. So, apart from using good readable content adequate keywords specially searched by SEO services providers is of maximum importance for the development for your business. SEO services make sure your website get a significant place on the web and you earn huge profits.

Submitting your web site to search engines is the
single-most important step, to bringing in a
flood of targeted traffic.

These people are actively seeking you out when
they type your keywords into that little search
box. Question is "Are the keywords they're using,
the same keywords you're using?" and if so, "How
relevant are these keywords to what you're
selling?"

You see, when you submit your web site to a
search engine, some will ask you for a list of
keyw
rds *relevant* to your web site.

Other search engines will only send a spider to
your site to look at your content. What they do,
is take a kind of inventory of the words you use
on your main page. Whichever words you use most
often on this page, the spider will assume that's
what your site is about and will base your
listing on these words.

Then there are those search engines that will
base your listing on the keyword and description
tags within the heading tag of your page.

We are going to focus on getting the right
keywords in the right places (optimizing) for the
free-to-get-listed search engines; then we will
move on to the pay-per-click and the pay-per-
inclusion engines.

Before you begin compiling your list of keywords,
you need to do a little bit of research.

Start by putting yourself in your customer's
shoes. Pretend that you know nothing about your
product or service; this can be very difficult to
do. The best way to find out what keywords your
customers may use, is to ask them. Using your
spouse or your friends as guinea pigs, is the
easiest way to do this.

Without telling them what your site is about,
give them a very vague idea; as most of your
customers really don't have any idea that they
need your product. For example, you might say,
"Honey, if you wanted to make some extra money
for Christmas gifts this year, what words would
you type in this little box?"

If your spouse has the time and is willing to
help you out, ask him/her to go to at least 3
different search engines and conduct at least 3-5
searches, using different keywords and phrases
each time. Also, be sure that she/he clicks on a
few of the results, but only the ones she/he
feels is relevant her/his search.

Note: Most internet marketers are alone in their
work. Meaning, many times the spouse of the
marketer usually doesn't know how internet
marketing works. (My husband can't even turn on a
computer!) Allow your spouse to use any keyword
or phrases she/he needs to find what she/he is
looking for. There are no wrong answers here and
you'll learn a lot more if she/he isn't given a
lesson in search engines beforehand.

Make sure you write down *every* keyword and/or
phrase your spouse uses. Also pay close attention
to the web sites she/he clicks on from the search
results. This will give you an outside look at
how the majority of your customers are going to
find you.

After your spouse clicks on one of the search
results that she/he is interested in, ask them
"Why?" What was it about that particular site
that interested her/him? Take notes; this is good
stuff!

Note: Of course not everyone is selling
information on how to make money online. Some of
you may be selling crafts that you made yourself,
vitamins or weight loss products, long distance
service, etc. No matter what your site wants from
its visitors, you can still do this exercise.
Just be sure that your spouse only has a vague
idea of what she/he is searching for.

The next step in this exercise is to have your
spouse conduct their searches again, only this
time they should have a really good idea of
exactly what it is they are looking for. Tell
them to be specific in their searches.

Again, write down the keywords and/or phrases
they use, what sites they visit from the results
and why.

Be sure to also write down the URL of the web
sites they visit. (This is your competition!)
Next week, we are going to do a little undercover
work. You will become the ultimate internet spy!

Note: The reason I say to use your spouse or
friends for this exercise, is that we, as
marketers, tend to get so close to what we're
doing, that it's hard to get back, outside the
box, as newbies. We know what it is our product
does, and how it does it, but our customers
don't! We need to get inside their heads and
discover *their* idea of our product. This is the
easiest way to do that.

In the final of three articles on search engine history, SEO Expert David Viney looks at the emergence of Google and how the biggest of all the modern search engines came to dominate the market.

So how did Google get from a market share of <1% in 1999 to almost 80% today? What is so special about Google and how has it come to dominate the scene? In this article, the third in my search history series, I look at the role of luck, timing and the mistakes of competitors in the rise of Google. I also evaluate the unique technolog
and vision at the heart of the Google algorithm.

The Dot-com Shake-out

You might be surprised to hear me moan about the dot-com mania of 1999-2000. After all, for many of us it was an exciting time. However, for the early search engines, it was essentially a death-knell! The new money entering the market was huge but investors wanted to see returns. Search Engines were clearly part of the future, but where was their revenue stream? How could one make money from free results especially free results powered by very expensive computer infrastructures? This impatience grew following the dot-com crash of March 2000.

Yahoo! seemed to be the only company with any kind of sustainable "pure internet play" (from banner advertising which was at that time well funded by the dot-com dollar). At the same time, AOL were pursuing a moderately successful "walled garden" approach to traffic (i.e. where 70% of searches on the site led to content within AOL properties). The argument at the time was that making it easy for people to "exit" to other sites (the essential purpose of the modern search engine) meant losing the opportunity to sell them anything from your own site and content partners.

If you stop and think about it, you can see how very intelligent city analysts, investors and board members would be clamouring for (a) conversion to portal and (b) rapid acquisition of content and product / service offerings. Initiatives to expand search capability (and drive even more of your visitors off your site without payment for doing so) were bottom of the strategic shopping list; the battle cry instead was "content is king".

Altavista, acquired with DEC by Compaq in 1999, was relaunched at huge cost as a portal competitor to Yahoo! Similarly, Excite (now owned by broadband provider @home) tried to become an AOL clone. Lycos, already the largest "pure portal" in the Spring of 1999, merged with the largest Spanish language ISP, Terra Networks (and then ran itself into the ground).

Disney/ABC and NBC had already invested heavily in Infoseek and Snap respectively but quickly began to realize that the revenue they could derive from the increasingly portal-like services was never going to deliver the short term payback which shareholders typically seek. Steve Bornstein, chairman of Walt Disney Internet Group, said in his press release "the Internet environment has continued to shift and change, and therefore our strategies must also change". 400 employees at Go Network were layed off and a buyer sought for the Infoseek engine.

In December of 2000 a surprising report from StatMarket.com found that only 6.86% of all the referring traffic to websites originated from search engines (compared to 47.01% from direct navigation or bookmarks and 46.13% from internet links). The quality of this research has since been questioned, as it was based not on server logs but on the global Hitwise stat counter data (the code for which was only placed by many webmasters on the homepage of their site). However, this data came at a time when there was a collective loss of confidence in search and portal technologies. The dot-com crash of March 2000 had left investors with a major hangover.

Is it any surprise, then, that so many search properties disappeared altogether (or closed their internal crawl capability down) in 2001? With the closure of Northern Light (to the public at least) in January 2002, the Dot-Com shakeout had essentially closed or fatally wounded WebCrawler, Magellan, Excite, Infoseek, Go Network, Snap and Lycos. It also critically wounded Altavista, who were to struggle on without any real investment in their search capability until their acquisition by Yahoo! in 2003.

The Emergence of Paid Search

If the rush to convert all search engines to portals was (at the time at least) flawed strategic thinking, bad timing also played a part in the demise of so many early contenders.

Quietly and almost unnoticed during the mania was a relatively minor search player called go-to.com, renamed Overture in 2001. Whilst paid listings had been tried before, Overture (with a 2.76% market share in January 1999) were the first company was make a success of it, with some advertisers paying up to a dollar a click by 1998/9. Go-to.com, in fact, only carried paid results! Personally, I never really liked or used the site myself for that exact reason. However, they persevered with their strategy, determined to find a sustainable revenue model and confident that the research-oriented search engines of the time had little to offer a growing army of web users looking to shop 'til they dropped!

History has proved that Overture were right (to persevere with paid ads) although initially there was limited evidence of this. Perhaps if the dot-com investors had only waited a little longer (or started a little later) the value of sponsored results would have become clear. Either way, the big boys hared off into portal oblivion, whilst the Overture tortoise (and the model it spawned) ultimately won the race.

All the best businesses start in Garages

It really is true. The 12x18 foot garage, in which David Packard and William Hewlett launched Hewlett-Packard in 1939, is considered by many to be the birthplace of Silicon Valley. A short drive away is the Los Altos garage of Steve Jobs' parents, where Apple Computer Inc. was born. Google Inc, similarly traced its early days to a garage this one in Menlo Park, California where the newly formed Google Inc spent its first five months as a proper business in late 1998.

However, the real story of Google began more than two years earlier, as the research project (nicknamed "BackRub") of two Stanford Ph.D. students: Michigan-born Larry Page and Russian Sergey Brin. The simple obsession which preoccupied both was the links between sites on the exponentially growing web. In his original thesis research, Page hypothesised that any link from one site to another was akin to an academic citation and the description (or anchor text) attached to that link like an annotation. If one could identify the sites most cited for any given annotated subject, one could establish a pecking order of significance for any given subject area.

What particularly fascinated Page was what he saw as a fundamental weakness in Tim Berners-Lee's original design for the web; namely that it was possible to see easily what any site was linking to but very hard (if not impossible) to see the sites linking back. Backrub sought to catalogue all the links on the web and, through doing so, establish which sites had the most "authority" overall and in any given topic. Page insists that it was never his intention at this point to create a search engine. However, intellectual curiosity drove him forward into the creation of a new kind of crawler, based on a link ranking system (now called PageRank after it's inventor) which was the first of it's kind.

It was at this point that Sergey Brin was drawn into the project. At this time. Page estimated the size of the web to be approximately 10 million documents and the number of links to be perhaps 100 million. Altavista had impressed everyone by managing to index all those documents on a single large computer. However, indexing both the documents and the links was, to say the least, a big hairy problem; precisely the sort of challenge that appealed to Brin.

In fact, the problem was much tougher than either probably realized at the time. At this point, the web was growing at an exponential rate and the computing resources required for the task were in fact well beyond the humble resources of a student project. This brings me to the part played by lady luck in the formation of Google.

In late 1996, the BackRub crawler was consuming nearly half of all Stanford's network bandwidth and, on occasions bringing down Stanford's internet connection. Page and Brin had to beg and borrow storage capacity and were continually running out of space and lines of credit. Whilst both were hardly mucking about, they were not completely sure about a career in business. As Page puts it now, he was either going to be a professor or run a company that made a difference. Nothing in between would do.

So, believe it or not, in the period from 1996-7, all three of the then market leaders were approached by two students with an idea for licensing a new kind of search engine. In August 2004, at the Search Memories session at SES San Jose, the panel included Doug Cutting (formerly Senior Architect, Excite), Steve Kirsch (formerly founder of Infoseek) and Louis Monier, (formerly CTO at AltaVista). Together they reminisced about the early years of search engines and all admitted, one by one, that they had sent the founders of Google packing. Steve Kirsh was the most colorful; "Go pound sand I told them". Doug Cutting said "I wasn't impressed with their demo at all" and Louis Mornier shrugged "I didn't have the authority to sign a check anyway".

What if Larry Page and Sergey Brin had been just a little bit better at PowerPoint? What if Louis had had his check book with him? This book might have been called "How to get to the top of Altavista" and Digital might still have been in business, continuing the make the machines that power the internet. Lady luck certainly played her part in the proceedings!

However, despite their efforts to dodge destiny, the Stanford graduates did not find a suitable established partner. Some are born great, others achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them. Perhaps Larry and Sergey fall into that rare latter category. By the end of 1998, the Backrub service (renamed Google in September 1997) was growing fast and serving more than 10,000 daily queries. The guys were introduced through a shared contact to Andy Bechtolsheim, an active early-stage investor. After a short demo, Andy literally thrust a check for $100,000 into their hands. Google inc. was born and Brin and Page famously celebrated with a trip to Burger King.

The guys literally lacked a bank account or a legal entity called Google to deposit the check into. So, once the burgers write digested, the two set up Google Inc and rented a garage from a friend. Five months later, the initial investment roll totaled just under $1 million and, by June 1999, a further round (of venture capital funding) exceeded $25 million. If it were fiction, you would say it was a fairy tale but sometimes truth is stranger than fiction (particularly in the strange world of technology).

From backroom to boardroom in just 5 years

So what does Google mean anyway? Brin and Page close the name, from a brainstorm with fellow students, as a play on the word Googol, meaning the number one followed by 100 zeros. Google's use of the term reflects the company's mission; "to organize the immense, seemingly infinite amount of information available on the web". As an interesting footnote, the word Googol itself is traceable to the work of American mathematician Edward Kasner in the 1940s. His descendants briefly considered suing Google in 2004 for using the name without royalty. Only in America!

Unlike their competitors, Google had a clear vision, perfect timing and all the luck going. Whilst the big boys fiddled with their content-rich portals, Google ruthlessly focused on building the biggest index in the world, ranking sites organically by their authority and serving paid listings alongside, in emulation of Overture's successful model. As the web grew into a giant haystack, Google helped you find the needle. These factors, above all, laid the foundation for Google's later dominance.

The company was also pretty thrifty and managed to make it's initial venture funding go a very long way (at a time when other dotcom millionaires were spending money like it was going out of fashion). In those early days, licensing the search results to other internet sites and portals was the key source of revenue. Key moments included the use of Google by Yahoo! in 2000 to power their search results and the later decision by AOL to do the same. Suddenly, there was only one serious player in town!

Following the important business wins of 2000 (and the launch in that same year of Google Adwords and the Google Toolbar) the search engine was handling more than 100 million searches a year. By the fourth quarter of 2001, the company was turning a profit an incredible achievement when one considers that Amazon (founded five years before Google in 1994) only turned its first quarterly profit at the same time.

Between July 2002 and June 2003, global referrals from search engines almost doubled (from 7.18% to 13.46%) and have continued to increase quickly since. Most small business sites now obtain more than 85% of their new visitors from search engines, with Google typically sending about 70% of them. In the UK, search engines have overtaken adult sites (in October 2006) as the most heavily trafficked category on the web.

It was perhaps inevitable that Google would eventually come to market and it's initial public offering took place in August 2004, creating a company worth $23 billion. More importantly, the flotation raised some $1.67 billion, which Google could use to develop new products and make acquisitions. It also made instant paper millionaires of many of Google's employees.

Perhaps the biggest irony of search history is that AltaVista and the rest were not necessarily wrong in their obsession with portals. They were simply right at the wrong time! The preoccupation of today is not dissimilar to that of 1999, with Google and others all seeking to built "stickability" into their proposition. Suffice to say for now that those IPO billions in the bank were helpful in the acquisitions of YouTube and DoubleClick in 2006-7.

The history of search engines is really a history of university PHD students, fascinated by the growth of the internet and the desire to capture and bring into good order the vast information resources of humanity. However, search has now outgrown the computing resources and funding capacity of the typical university and the market is increasingly controlled by a small number of well-funded public companies. Google dominate, with a market share of nearly 80% on most pundit's measures. This is the final article in my series on search history. On my blog, I ponder the future of search and ask the question; could Google's market share be at the start of an inevitable decline?

Webpages are written with an intend to share information or to persuade visitors to buy. If that could please search engines as well you would get a lot of traffic. There are many things that can result in higher listing by search engines.This is called optimizing the page for search engine.
Search engine optimization is a philosophy in itself and has many facets at which you can work upon.But in this article, we focus on content optimization for the web pageSearch engines have evolved over time and they ca no more be fooled by writing or stuffing keywords. Their algorithm has changed and your page needs to be good and well optimized for getting noticed.Most of effective search engines heavily rely on actual keyword present in your text.Before we move on to text we must also discuss "Title Tag". It is the text that appears on search engine listing and also on browser bar when the web page is displayed.In contrast to meta tags and keywords, title tag is still important.Title tag is the text written in the section of the web page and after the tag. For example, the title of this article would be displayed in browser bar as you read it. Title tag is usually should be between 50 and 80 characters including spaces. The maximum allowed limit is is different for different search engines, so make sure that your most important words are near the beginning of the title.A title tag has to be descriptive of the webpage. Therefore it should be a readable phrase and not a keyword list. If there are too many keywords in your title tag, your site could be seen as spamming. and sections of the area are other two places where you can place your keywords, but a number of search engines today will go straight to the web copy after title tag.You would want your copy to be liked by search engine but at the same time it should be readable by humans too and should not appear keyword stuffed. It is important to put keyword about every hundred words.More important than where you put the keywords is choosing the right keywords. Therefore making a list of relevant keywords for your site would always come handy.One last thing! It takes time to come into search engine listing. Search engines also consider how long you have been online. Therefore success on the search engines will not come overnight.

Top 3 Activities To Do If You Want to Succeed in Internet Marketing

Internet marketing is an attractive idea to make money on the side that eventually will become a full time income. Sadly, there is a lot of hype around this activity with thousands of products that promise outrageous incomes in 30 days or less or whatever other hype they can think about. But the overall premise is that you will be a multimillionaire by the time you finish reading their ebook and implement their techniques to dominate Adwords and Cli
kbank products.

However, the 3 best things to do to succeed are:

  1. Learn how to drive traffic to your site for free. This means, learn SEO. Dont depend on Adwords and CPC campaigns. This can be very costly if you dont know what you are doing. Adwords is a great way to test a new campaign as long as you know how to properly set it up. Most people fail very fast and go into debt because they fail to do proper keyword research and set up their campaigns the right way. If you want to use Adwords as a way to drive traffic to your site or offer, you should consider reading Perry Marshalls Adwords Definitive Guide.

  1. Dont buy every ebook that promises huge payouts in a matter of weeks. Most of these are hype and will under deliver. Take your time to research the products that you want to buy to study or to promote. A great place to do this research is http://www.24hrprofits.com You will find consumer reports and product fact sheets without hype or bias and it will save you time and money.

  1. Take your time. Dont get discouraged because its been a month and you havent made any sales. This will take time. But if you stay the course, educate yourself and focus on the fundamentals, you will succeed.

In my opinion, one of the best products if you are starting on Affiliate Marketing is Commission Blueprint. Commission Blueprint combined with Perry Marshalls Adwords guide will give a big boost and will be a great resource. Commission Blueprint has a step by step approach and it will show you via online video and training pdf ebooks, how to properly do keyword research, set up your adwords ads, product selection and scalability of winning keywords and landing pages combinations. The course also includes templates for landing pages that will help you get started if you dont know how to fully design html websites.

This is by far the best product Ive seen in a long time and it covers both free and paid methods to set up winning campaigns. The system, if worked as taught will give a huge advantage over other affiliate beginners that are struggling with PPC or other ways to drive traffic to a site. Even if you decide to not use Adwords as a means to drive traffic, it will still be a great way to learn the whole process of affiliate marketing and how to make money online, whether your interest is supplemental income or to eventually make it a full time activity.
