Comment spam is more than a jolly nuisance. It is also costly for business to have to deal with it.

But today I installed an effective solution which is not only free (that magic word), it\'s also easy to set up. And easy\' is, of course, the other magic word that we all love so much.

First I set up a new WordPress blog at Harmedia.com - and that was as easy as falling off a log because I used Fantastico which is built into CPanel webhosting.

Just now I am finishing things off with a few extra plugins
Including reCAPTCHA which is available free. And as I mentioned, it is so easy to install.

Step 1. You download it from recaptcha.net and unzip the file.

2. You upload the two .php files to your Wordpress plugins folder.

3. Then you go to your Plugins page and activate reCAPTCHA by clicking it. For more details www.greateducationonline.com The new page reminds you to enter the 2 big long numbers you got when you registered at recaptcha.net (called public and private keys and they are unique to this one site of yours). That\'s it. You\'re all set.

WHY I LIKE reCAPTCHA

- It\'s free.

- It works.

- There is no messing around with copying code into your blog template.

- No permissions to change. (CHMOD isnt hard once you know what you\'re doing but the learning curve before that has befuddled many a beginner, I\'d say.)

- A feel-good bonus is the fact that you\'re helping the Internet Archive to improve the accuracy of its Optical Character Recognition software.

How so? Because the words shown come directly from old books that are being digitized. Words that the OCR software cannot read are fed into captchas and if multiple users like you and me all render it the same way then that result is entered into the OCR memory.

So not only does your blog get protected from robot spam, your commenters are helping old books get digitized correctly.

Are you using captchas to protect your blog from comment spam yet? For more details www.greatindustrialguide.com It\'s free and it\'s easy. What are you waiting for?

By the way, CAPTCHA stands for \"Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart\", although ironically the recaptcha.net site does not include the word Public in its explanation of the term. So.. would that make it a CATCHA? - without the P.

Email marketing offers the unique opportunity of direct contact without the hassles of paper-based mailings. Delivery is instant and response can be as quick circumventing the usual pace of snail mail. Email marketing is used in three distinct ways:

To inform customers about offers, discounts and the like

To send updated information on a companyกฆs products and services

To send free informative articles and write-ups to maintain contact and build customer loyalty.

Email marketing strategies of the future are set
o undergo a dramatic change and much of this can be attributed to software advances in email marketing tools. Before we understand how, we need to first put in perspective the key issues in any email marketing program.

Who do you target: Identifying Your prospects

How often: The frequency with which you email them

What will you say to them: email content

Tracking results

Indications are that software advances will positively impact all these aspects of email marketing.

The impact of software advances on email marketing trends

Rising to the demands of business users, service providers offer improved features and advanced email-marketing capabilities. The advanced capabilities have been studied for each of the 4 key issues in email marketing outlined above:

Who do you target: Identifying your prospects

—Targeting messages by segments using advanced database and search options: You can vary messages by geographic area, by purchase history, and if available in your opt-in list- by demographics and lifestyle. Software features allow you to easily identify specific type of customers for customized promotions. You can mail customers who purchased Product "XYZ" a complementary offer for a new Product.
—List Management & Filtering Tools to organize your Opt-in lists, you can also merge more than one opt-in lists and duplicated addresses get automatically removed.

How often: The frequency with which you email them

You will be able to fix the precise the month, week, day, and even the hour that email messages go out to prospects. You can schedule the exact dates for an autoresponder series

What will you say to them: email content?

Email content is developing into กงmade of internetกจ material as writers become savvier with this medium

—More visual oriented and high impact glitziness is envisaged using animation features to make the email messages more appealing.

—The ability to sell effectively through email will be based on marketing dictates and strategies much like mainstream ad campaigns. Is your information relevant to the customer need? Is it different from competition?

—In the emerging email marketing era several providers will have readymade email templates that simplify the process of designing email promotions

—There is a lot of learning built-up in the last few years on winning emails and on email content that worked. Books and ebook resources written by those with experience (on what type of email content, titles or questions increase response rates) will greatly help new comers in this field. A great deal of study is going into email กฅsubject linesกฆ that work.

—Another key development is in software tools that allow a degree of personalization without having to individually carry it out email by email. Merging each subscriber's personal information into every email or newsletter, and merging subscribers' names into the subject line of every email is a strategy that minimizes the risk of being mistaken for SPAM.

—Your customers can choose to receive your message as HTML or text if you use technology called multi-part MIME technology

Tracking results
Analysis of how your email marketing campaign is faring is an important part of the whole process. There are advanced features that help you in evaluating your campaign results and take any corrective action if necessary. You can view your subscriber's history and instantly identify which email promotions; autoresponders or newsletters have been sent and view the response rates. And all this will be available in real time.
Tracking your email campaigns in real time means you know instantly how many people bought your product, how many chose to subscribe to your newsletter, or even how many autoresponders were sent out in the last two weeks.

In conclusion

For successful email marketing you also have to be backed up with a marketing strategy that taps into the traditional concepts of marketing. Your product must serve a need within your target in a better manner than any competing product, you have to hit the price point at which people will buy; arrange easy and quick delivery of product and secure payment systems. Once you have these in place, the persuasiveness of your email messages and the interesting tools outlined above will act on your customers to deliver results.

I like to call affiliate marketing businesses ecommerce for the rest of us. They are a way to monetize a website that comes with high profit potential yet contain very low risk.

You don't have to develop your own product.

You don't have to take stock of inventory or manage a store.

You don't handle shipping and handling.

You don't have to handle customer services.

The best part is they can be started and operated on a shoestring budget.

Affiliate ma
keting businesses are perhaps the most widely adopted business model. According to a recent Forrester Research Inc survey, nearly 80% of online merchants actively use affiliate marketing. However, the sad fact is, despite its popularity and simplicity, most affiliate marketing businesses fail to make more than $500 a month.

In fact, numerous affiliates never see their first check before they throw in the towel.

E-commerce for the rest of us has become e-commerce for the best of us

Why?

The simplest answer would be majority are doing it wrong. Most affiliates run their affiliate marketing businesses wrong from the very first day of start up.

Now, affiliate marketing does produce high income earners-- people who earn $140,000 or more a year and others who earn full time incomes of 50, 000 or more. However, the vast majority simply fails to earn.

Here are some of the key reasons affiliate marketing businesses fail.

1. Failure to prepare. Lack of research about the business of affiliate marketing, your niche and the affiliate program all contribute to early failure. The over excitement, and lack of knowledge, cause people to jump at anything and act before they think.

Doing feels productive. Planning doesn't. Even if we do not know what we're doing we feel better about ourselves when we are doing something. However, being underprepared causes the potentially successful to become unsuccessful. Curb your enthusiasm and do your planning.

-Develop a strong web concept/theme

-Select the best affiliate programs

-Get to know your competition

Yes it's boring, but it's better than closing up shop after a year.

2. Poor quality traffic. Most affiliates think if they build a website they will come. Not so. Having a website doesn't mean you will receive quality traffic. I say "quality" because not all traffic is beneficial to you. You site needs quality traffic that will do more than just browse.

To become part of the top 3% of affiliate marketing businesses you want to:

-Create content that is attractive to search engines

-Track how each page performs and how each page ranks

-Analyze Click in and Click through patterns

-Use more than one traffic generation method

-Be consistent. You can't generate constant flow of traffic with a "stop-and-go" work method.

3. Dependency on Merchants: It's great that your merchant has taken the time to create those banners. However, most merchants stop there. They don't offer any startup training or any new ideas for their affiliates. Tis happens with both good and bad companies.

The best way to avoid merchant dependency is to go beyond affiliate marketing. You can not expect the affiliate merchant to teach you everything; It is up to you get educated. Ignore the marketing material and learn how to do it right on your own. This is what super affiliates do.

Affiliate marketing businesses aren't destined to fail. You can keep yours from doing so by considering the tips above.

So, you got a big surprise last night, didn't you? You went
to search for your Website and it wasn't there anymore!
Where did it go? Did you have to use double quotes just to
find it? Not a pleasant feeling, I bet!

Let's face it: having your website de-listed or sent all the
way back to the start of the line isn't a joking matter! All
those months of hard work just gone down the drain! Poof !!

Is there a way out of this seemingly mortal blow to your
website; can you repair your Search Engine
isting? Yes
there is!
If your mistake was one of the dumb mistakes we all make on
account of lack of experience, there is a solution.

Don't think the Search Engines are stone monoliths; you can
talk to them! However, the first thing you have to do is be
calm and deliberate your next moves as you repair the damage
to your Search Engine listing.

Here are some pointers to look for the source of your Search
Engine troubles:

(a) Go back to the nearest specific date your website was
doing well with the Search Engines.

(b) Think of any changes you've done to your Website since
then and make a list.

(c) Have you created any other websites/blogs/message boards
with a very close or identical name?

(d) Have you done any tweaking to your Meta tags or website
content?

(e) Have you used any artificial web page or content
enhancement technology?

Once you revise your list and eliminate any obvious reasons
for trouble, keep on going looking for any others sources of
problems. By all means, do a thorough inspection and don't
leave a stone unturned. Repair and revise is the thing!

Go back to the basics and do your homework; don't put too
much stake on much of the (mis)information you find floating
around the Web. You also have to consider that Search Engine
technology is an evolving thing and what worked two years
ago, won't necessarily work today. Make sure your sources of
information are fresh and relevant.

Here are published guidelines on what some of the big Search
Engines take into consideration for a good listing:

Yahoo:
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch/deletions/deletions-05.html

With their resent Natural language initiative, it's clear
Yahoo wants web pages that are very readable. Be careful not
to let "keyword loading" affect the easy readability of your
website.

MSN:
http://beta.search.msn.co.in/docs/siteowner.aspx

Google:
http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html

Once you've done all that you can think of to clean-up your
Website, contact the Search Engines and offer them an
explanation while asking for a review of your Website.

Keep it short and businesslike and ask any pertinent
questions. Consider the SE staff is composed of people just
like you. We all make mistakes! Believe me, they have many
years of experience dealing with Newbies; they can also spot
a slick operator.

You might have to wait some time depending on their schedule for
crawling your neck of the Web. Look at your server logs to
see an average time between SE crawling.

A note of caution:

I don't see why in the world a Newbie would deal with
technology that artificially enhances web pages. There are
plenty in the market extolling their virtues. I've done
research on many of them and consider them only useful in
the hands of an experienced Webmaster.

If you MUST use any of them, build a dummy website to test
all your ideas before you build your dream website. I've
heard of folks with much more experience getting their site
banned for using some of the artificial enhancement
technologies.

If you follow the above guides, you will repair your Search
Engine listing. Your Website will return to its former
Search Engine friendly ranking. Keep your eyes open for the
next time and do your best not to make any more mistakes.
Take a deep breath and move on, that much wiser for the
experience.

I can't even count the number of times that people ask me how they can make money with their website. Some want to create a website with the sole purpose of making money. Others, who have an existing website, want it to make some money for them.

There are two main ways to make money, selling your own stuff or selling someone else's stuff.

Selling Other People's Stuff

Many people offer Affiliate Programs. They set up an affiliate program, which lets you sell their products or services on your site, and in turn
you get a percentage of the sale. Putting a banner, buttons or links on your site usually does this, and when someone clicks on them and buys something, you get credit for the sale.

People and companies of all sizes offer this kind of program. Amazon.com introduced its program in 1996. As of today, there are over 500,000 people who are affiliates for Amazon. This gives them the advantage of having a huge sales force.

I participate in two affiliate programs on my site. I have a page of books that I suggest people read. Each book has a special link to Barnes and Noble, and if someone buys one of these books, I get a commission. I also have a banner to a web hosting company, and as above, I get a commission for each sale. One advantage of the web-hosting link is that I can use it too. So whenever I set up web hosting for a website design client, I get a commission.

My girlfriend has the Google ads affiliate program on her site, and when anyone clicks on one of the ads, she gets paid up to a dollar. This can really add up over a year.

Affiliate programs are a great way to make extra money. Many people do extensive research on which affiliate program(s) to use, and make a large portion, or all, of their income this way. They look for programs that have high demand and the pay high commissions. Commissions usually range between 5% and 15%. Be sure to read the fine print to see what you will be paid, when you will be paid and all the other details they have in the contract. Also, be sure to pick affiliate programs that relate to your site so that the people visiting your site will be interested in the programs you offer.

While I don't expect to make a lot of money from the affiliate programs I use, last month I made $100 with the website referral program. Not enough to retire on, but I did nothing to make this money.

There is a dark side to affiliate programs. In order for you to get credit for a sale the person usually must buy the item when they click on the link you have on your site. If they click on the link, bookmark the site and go back later to buy the item, you will not get credit for the sale. This is because the banner, link or button on your site has a unique number that tells the vendor which affiliate the sale came from. So if the person buys something without using the link, there's no way to tell where the sale came from. It's just something you have to accept with affiliate programs. This probably explains why after more than three years I have not made any money from the many books on my site that have links to Barnes and Noble.

Another thing to watch out for are the affiliate programs that pay you only after you get a certain amount of money in your account. If you sell a lot of the item, or it has a high-ticket price, you should be fine. But I have friends that sell things that pay a small commission, and they're lucky to get a check once a year.

Next month's newsletter will be part 2 of this article, and it will cover selling your own stuff, and what to sell.

Community. That's what you're building with a business blog. You are establishing yourself as the Mayor of your online village and you are hoping the citizens show up soon. If they don't drop by eventually you need to ask yourself why.

Many blogs are simply struggling to survive instead of thrive. They are filled with information, but very little of it is worth getting too excited about. The delivery is ho hum and there are very few new informational posts. They simply regurgitate what others have already said. The c
tizens of your blog community post a collective yawn and forget to hit send.

In order for there to be the excitement needed for your blog you've got to provide your readers with new information, new facts, expert analysis and you've absolutely got to be passionate about what you're talking about. Yes, allow dissenting opinion, but defend your leadership position by providing members who disagree with further proofs when needed. Another question you need to ask yourself is if you care enough about the product or subject matter to express the vulnerability of passion.

The truth is you can be an articulate spokesperson for your blog subject, you could be a random informationalist with no real vested interest in how the work is received, or you could even be perceived as a cyber bully who can't stand to be contradicted. If I were you I'd aim for the first - an articulate spokesperson.

When you can accurately defend your position in a diplomatic and articulate fashion you present yourself as a leader who has the expertise to pass along valuable data to the readers. Many readers may want to know if you are the individual they would like to follow when it comes to information gathering and vision casting for what they are doing.

You will need links and interviews to compliment your own expertise. You might need to occasionally think outside the box on common issues. You will need to invest time and patience in developing practical and thought provoking material for your readers. You will need to make visiting your blog as much of an event as possible.

How are you doing so far?

If you get a press release you would like to share with your readers you might consider sending a blog post with the information along with links as well as a personal analysis regarding what the information means to your readers. Many bloggers err in this concept because all they do is simply pass along the press release with no meaningful leadership. Your readers can find that exact press release in virtually any blog on a topic similar to yours. It may be good information, but it's not unique until you make it so.

You should also add applicable pictures or graphics to each blog post. Add bullet points of subheadings for the scanners in your online village. Blog readers are no different than most of the rest of the online world - they are scanners first and foremost. By drawing them visually to the most important concepts you can help them come to terms with what information they might want to read most. This can keep those scanners coming back more often.

Assign some passion and expertise to your blog it may go a long way in allowing your constituents to view you as their leader.

They say "diamonds are a girl's best friend". Just like a flawless diamond in the making, a website demands significant attention to detail in order to stand up and deliver and captivate its target audience.

Ever wondered what components clearly define a website as "professionally" done? It should have a polished look! You don't need to spend thousands of dollars on web design, simply make sure it loads quickly and employs a simple navigation system. Your visitors must feel that the time spent at
your site was time well spent! Pay extra close attention to your sales copy. If you have all kinds of questions popping in your head as you read your own sales material, so will your customers. There is a simple approach to creating great sales copy and it works like crazy.

Ask yourself a few simple questions, "What's in it for me?, "How can you fulfill your promise?", "Why should I believe you?", "What if I don't like it?". Write your sales copy to paint a portrait of "yes, I can!" by answering each question; giving a risk free assurance by including a money back guarantee along with a good time factor. Strive to incorporate all of your answers in your sales copy and you'll convert your readers into buyers.

One of the hottest topics on the Internet today is search engine optimization, another critical and important component of a professional website. With recent surveys showing over 40% of all search engine traffic coming from Yahoo Directory, it has never been more important to pay close attention to the selection of your title and description. First and foremost, get a head start on the competition by choosing a keyword rich domain name. It's a clear advantage you may have overlooked in preparing for search engine submission.

Make sure that your title is 5 words or less and includes your most important keywords. Try to limit your site description to 25 words or less. Remember, Yahoo doesn't look at your meta tags like a typical search engine, so make your title and description count! If you are submitting to Yahoo for the first time, make sure to submit to Google, Yahoo's search partner, then Yahoo in a few days. Google creates the description of your site by looking for the first bold word so make sure you optimize your site accordingly.

Every webmaster should analyze their site's keyword count. Your most important keywords should be 5% - 8% of your keyword count. If your percentages are too high, the search engines may consider your site as "spam". If your percentages are too low, your site will never appear in the Top 100 of any search. Keyword and relevancy optimization can easily move a site from complete obscurity to instant popularity in the search engines overnight. Do it right the first time and I'll see you at the top!

It's a painstaking process but website optimization is a necessary step towards securing market position. In an age of instant gratification, ones and zeros, gigabytes and terabytes, the simple virtues of patience and perseverance are seldom nurtured. In developing your website, take time to reflect on your mission, and if you do only one thing well, share your passion with your target audience. Do it for the sheer love of it. Your audience will appreciate your efforts. It's the first step towards creating a website that speaks the language that your visitors want to hear!

With the right attention to detail, just like a long lasting relationship, you'll have no fear in the night that your website might desert you.

I hope this helps in your future marketing decisions.

You've watched your web site grow, gain a higher PR, and more incoming links. Your ranking has steadily increased for keywords that relate to the product or service your site is selling, until finally you reach number one.

You're ecstatic! But a few days go by and traffic hasn't increased. There are no more queries for your product or service and most importantly, no increased revenue, no return on your investment of either time or money into your web site's search engine optimization.

Why is this? Why
s it that so many web sites out there reach top positioning on the search engines and yet still see no increase in traffic? There are several reasons for this.

First, you may not be targeting keywords that your potential customers are searching for. Get into the minds of your customers, figure out what terminology they are using while on Google or Yahoo! For example's sake, let's make up a fictitious service, an alternative headache healing method called "Ache-Away".

It's simply to easy to forget that your potential customers are individuals who have more than likely, not heard of your company or your service. A number one ranking for the term "Ache-Away" may not yield very much traffic because no one is searching for it.

It is more likely that phrases such as "how to get rid of a headache" or "headache remedy" are being searched for more often. This will bring you new traffic and a new clientele. You want to utilise simple, everyday language in your web site's titles and each page's content.

Remember that the language used in your industry is not necessarily the language used to refer to your industry by people outside of it. Do your keyword research. Tools such as Wordtracker.com will help you pinpoint the exact keywords that are searched for the most by your potential customers. Consumer language is key to making your number one ranking effective in bringing you more traffic and highly targeted traffic.

Another reason your number one ranking may not be bringing you any traffic is because the ranking is on a search engine that has very little of the search engine market. As is stands, Google, MSN and Yahoo! are the 3 main players.

Some industries have consumers who use one of these search engines more than the others, as well.

For instance, a top ten ranking on Yahoo! for 'search engine optimization' may not bring in as much traffic as a top ten ranking for the same phrase on Google, because generally speaking, consumers looking for search engine optimization have a decent idea of what it is and know that a top ten ranking for such a competitive keyword on Google is quite impressive.

Basically, a large portion of people in the market for search engine optimization services will be looking for such services on Google. Alternatively, there are many industries who's consumers predominantly use Yahoo! or MSN or even industry-specific directories.

Tools like the aforementioned Wordtracker.com have features that include showing the difference between how many times a keyword is searched for on Google as opposed to MSN or Yahoo! Utilising such services and tools will have a tremendous affect on the success of your search engine campaign.

Finally, what about the sites that are getting new traffic from their number one ranking but don't seems to be making any sales? The largest reason for this is that those sites are not visitor friendly. Visitor friendliness is simply the most important aspect of a web site.

If you site is not welcoming, understandable and easy to navigate, there is simply no point to achieving top page placement on the search engines.

You want your visitors to be intrigued, to want to read on, to visit pages other than your front page. You want to be able to offer you web site visitors a wealth of information and possibly even tools.

Web users want to feel they have gained something from visiting a web site and the majority of them are in a low attention span mindset. You need to capture them immediately or you'll lose them. Make sure you use simple language, not industry-specific jargon. Make your site clear and uncluttered.

Avoid annoyances and distractions such as entrance pages, animations, and sound. Give them the goods they came for as soon as possible or they may be looking at the #2 ranked web site within minutes.

In short, the key to optimizing your number one ranking is knowing your audience. You need to know the minds of the people who are most likely to spend money once they've reached your web site.

Not only will you get the traffic you're looking for, but you'll be making the sales you and experiencing a return on your search engine optimization investments.

To Your Success!

"I Don't Want To Publish My Own Ezine-
That's My Final Answer!"
copyright 2001-02 John Evans

Some time ago I had an inkling that I would very much
like to publish my own ezine. Seemed like a good idea.
After all, we constantly hear that doing so is one of
the best ways to get our own messages out.

Seemed like a good idea...

I thought, "How hard can it be? Nothing to it."

Only a few small decisions to make:

Think of a good, classy name.
Come up with a clean &quo
;layout".
How long should I make it?
How often do I publish?
Am I a good enough communicator?
Am I any good at writing?
How do I attract subscribers?
Where do I get really good content?
Whose articles do I publish?
How many free ads do I give?
How many lines do I give to a free ad?
Offer paid ads?
Send it by email, or make them come to my web site?
Do I really want to worry about being accused of SPAM?
Am I mentally equipped to maintain a 'schedule'?
Will I get cancellations if I don't publish on time?
Will I get cancellations if I publish the "wrong" article?
Will anyone really read my ezine, or just skim through it,
looking only for their own ad?
If I only publish 20 ads, will everyone else unsubscribe?
Do I run contests?
Does anyone really participate in contests?
Do I want to 're-do' ads that are not properly formatted?
Do I have the stamina to put up with chronic complainers?
With all those other ezines out there, will I be able to
compete?
How long do I have to wait before I can charge for ads?
Do I want to charge for ads?
If so, how much?

So, there you have it. I guess maybe, just maybe, I wrote
all of these items down just to convince myself I really
didn't want to publish an ezine! (And it worked!)

But, one thing's for sure; it also made me realize a
little bit of just how much those ezine publishers go
through to bring us all that great content. And, I'll
bet there are many, many things I didn't even think of.

No, I think I'll just sit back, relax, and wait for
those great newsletters to arrive in my email. Then, once
again, I'll enjoy all the wonderful articles, ads, advice,
and humor.

And I won't have to write a thing.

There is nothing more important than making your customers feel appreciated and like they are part of a larger group. The most important way to do this is to personalize emails so the recipient feels like an individual rather than just another customer. There are many ways you can go about doing this and if you do it successfully then you will make more sales. Remember, though, that with personalization you must get it right every time. Otherwise, you will do more harm than good.

Multimedia
If you have a customer who has alre
dy made a purchase and you are trying to up sell them or cross sell them on other products then you will want to take advantage of the option of using multimedia and/or images. This is incredibly helpful and will allow you to really convert those sales. For example, if a customer recently purchased a new camera then you will want to use a picture of that camera in the follow up email. This lets the customer know that you are aware of his/her purchases and are providing a photo to solidify that. Photos or multimedia of the particular product are very helpful and worth including in your email marketing.

Affiliation
If you know something about your customers use it to your advantage. For example, if they are part of a club, a group, or an organization, you can take this information and make the customer feel special and want to buy from you. For example, if there are customers you know are a member of a particular chamber of commerce simply state that you are offering them a discount because they are a member in the chamber of commerce of that particular city. This works best with offers that are very relevant and this should not be overused. However, it does have its perks when used properly and it can really help you.

Know Your Recipient
One thing that is really important is that you only use information that you know about your recipient. Dont take any liberties and dont go assuming you know certain things about your recipient. When you do this then you are more than likely going to have the email backfire and potentially lose customers. You want personalized emails to show your customers how well you know them, not how confused you really are. Thats why it is so important to ensure the information you are using is correct and never assuming anything about your customer that they dont specifically tell you.

The overall goal of personalizing emails is ensuring that you reach out to your customers, create a bond with them, and potentially make a sale because of this. When you get it wrong, you lose customers, but if you get it right you are guaranteed to make some sales!

In this article, we will talk about the various search engines and directories, what their differences are, and why each is essential to delivering traffic to your site.

Getting your site listed in search engines and directories is an important part of building a successful site. Most people tend to think of search directories and engines as one in the same.  However, they are actually both quite different. The only similarity between the two, in fact, is that they both serve the same purpose: to help people find web sites o
interest to them

Search Engines: By far the most popular search engine around is Google. Other search engines include Lorming, Inktomi, AltaVista, AlltheWeb, and MSN.

Directories: Probably the most popular example of a directory is Yahoo. Other directories include Open Directory Project (dmoz.org) and Gimpsy. The Differences between Search Engines and Directories

Difference #1: Search engines are run by robots; directories are run by human editors

The most notable difference between search engines and directories is that search engines aren't updated by human editors like directories are. Instead, search engines are updated bi-monthly or monthly by robots—spiders and crawlers.  What are spiders and crawlers? They are programs written by programmers at a particular search engine that basically locate a page, browse it, and then report whatever it finds back to the search engine's database. What is found is then listed on the search engine.

Directories, on the other hand, are completely updated by human editors. What usually happens is that a person submits their site to the directory and then the editor will visit the site and see whether or not it is worthy of being listed in the directory. If it is, it will be grouped with other relevant sites in the directory. If not, it won't be listed at all.  Directories are typically harder to get listed in than search engines are for this reason. Human editors won't allow in unworthy sites; search engine bots will. Directories are usually updated very frequently by the editors.

Difference #2: Search engines are free to get listed in; some directories are not. Many directories charge money for each submission. Search engines never charge a dime because their bots are solely responsible for listing web sites. There are, however, free directories which you can submit your site to.

Difference #3: Search engines are more popular and more used. People want convenience. Search engines offer this. All people have to do is type in a keyword into the search engine and relevant sites come up. Those who use directories have to go through the hassle of going through categories and sub-categories. This takes time and patience, both things that many busy people just don't have.

Difference #4: Directories have listings grouped together by topic; search engines can sometimes be disorganized. When someone visits a directory, all they have to do is choose a category that interests them. Then, all the sites are relevant to that category will come up on the page. While search engines are usually effective, unrelated listings can sometimes come up in a search for a particular thing. There's nothing worse than doing a search for cars and having an unrelated listing for cats come up. Unfortunately, this is occasionally the case with search engines because they are updated by robots, not humans.

Why are Search engines and Directories important to your site?  There are a few reasons for why both are important to your site's traffic. The most obvious reason is that the more you are listed, the more likely it is people will visit your site. If people see your site in both search engines and directories, they are more likely to visit it than if they just saw it in a search engine.Even though directories aren't as popular now, they are still well-used by people because they neatly group together sites in a particular category. So if you run an online web design business and are listed in the web design category of the directory, everyone who looks for web design in that directory will see your site. Search engines are also important to your site because they will show your site if a particular keyword(s) is typed into the engine. If your site is listed in both directories and search engines, you will have more traffic than if your site were listed in one or the other.

Be sure to do whatever it takes to ensure that your site gets listed in both and you will reap the benefits.

Search engine bots and easy directory submission make it quick and painless for your site to get maximum exposure from both of these wonderful tools. So go ahead and take the steps necessary to get listed!

Not everyone who wants to do data entry jobs from home is going to be successful.  Part of picking out such a work life is choosing factors that are compatible with what you like to do and where your goals are.

Worker and broker

In most instances, selecting data entry jobs from home is done through a broker or listing agent web site.  These listing sites collect numerous data entry positions with needed information so that you can contact the company directly or through the broker.  Broker
are either free sites, or they can be no fee sites.  You should do the research to make certain that the listing broker that you select has a good reputation for professional attitudes and ethics. Check with online forums to see what other workers have to say about the broker before making a decision to use the listing service, particularly if you must pay a fee in order to gain access to the listings.

Worker and business

Instead of working through a listing broker, some home based workers choose to work directly with the business.  Doing data entry jobs from home is essentially the same either way, although the fee paid may vary slightly, because of the cut from the broker. Choose the business that you work for by reviewing their stated project, their pay level and their added stipulations and requirements before payment is released.  Check to see if payment is released upon completion of the particular task, or if you must wait for a specific date, such as the first of the following month.

Worker and home

In addition to the physical part of switching from work done at a corporate office or location to doing data entry jobs from home there is the consideration of the significant change in lifestyle involved.  Perhaps your home is not set up physically to allow for a home office.  Perhaps you are the type of person who requires interaction with others in order to do your best work. In either of these instances, being a person who works data entry or other type of work at home would not be a good fit.

Worker and equipment

In the same way as the fit for the personality of the worker operates, the worker and the type of equipment used must be a good match. Doing data entry jobs from home requires sitting at a keyboard and computer screen for a lengthy period of time each day as you complete the needed tasks you have been assigned. If you are a person who needs to be constantly moving, such a career will not be acceptable. This is another aspect of this type of work to consider before committing.

Worker and subject

Data entry jobs from home consist of several different types of work.  You can take your pick from medical or legal transcription, accounting and bookkeeping entries, database management and typical secretarial and clerical letters, emails and other correspondence and reports. Finding the type of data entry that you enjoy doing and that you have the experience and training to complete correctly will ensure that you will have a work day that is pleasant rather than a drudgery for you.  Obviously, if you have no interest in a particular subject or business product, you should not commit to doing data entry for such a product.

Page positioning is an art and a job all-its' own. It is a tedious and
boring, yet equally justifiable. Page positioning is a necessity for any web
site that needs to be noticed. And vital for search engine ranking.

Search Engines
Ranking high / scoring high / getting a good placement, all mean the same
thing. All search engines judge the pages submitted to them based on their
own criteria. Even with all of the variation, many principles seem to hold
true. Most search engines use software to quickly scan th
pages it receives.
With the information gathered it tries to categorize your site according to
the search engines data bank. When a person searches for specific words, the
system "pulls-up" from its' data bank the most relevant sites that
corresponds to these words. It does this by matching the same words used in
the search to the words on a page. The sites that contain these words with
most frequency, and in the correct places, are favored over other pages.

But What is the "right frequency" & "correct places"
By frequency we do not intend for you to go and make your site read every
other word the same. What we meant in the previous paragraph, was that you
should include the words you think most frequently will be used to search out
your page, AND that of your competitors. Use these words as "Key Words" to
insert into the image text, body, Meta Tags, Title and various places of your
web-site.

"Key Words"
Key words may well be the most important factor behind any determined web
site. They get the attention of the viewer, keep them reading, help place
your site in search engine searches, and bring you the added traffic you
desire. It is important that you choose your Key Words with care. They are
not to be treated lightly. It is better that you not use them at all, than to
underestimate them.
Key words can be chosen in many ways. However I strongly recommend using
the method that follows.
1) First, take some time to carefully compile a list a words you feel
strongly represent your business / web site. They should reflect what you
believe are words most likely searched by your current / future clients,
prospective clients, the general public, and even skeptics or bashers of your
trade. Include all of the words and phrases you think these same people would
use to seek out your competitors, and likely employed tradesmen or trades
women. 2) Narrow this list down to approximately 20 entries of 2 - 3 word
phrases that use as many of the words you chose as possible. For instance a
cookie baker with a list containing words such as chocolate chip, raisin
oatmeal, batter, dough, experts, cookie, gourmet, dozens, etc., etc., can
maximize the potency of his "Key Words" by using them together to make catchy
and reusable phrases. Like "Gourmet cookie dough" or "Cookies buy the dozen."
If kept even shorter between 2-3 words you can use them all the time when
submitting your page manually to the engines. They will usually ask for
additional descriptive words, or key words. 3) Check them "Key Words" out
with a key word generator that counts search frequency / popularity of "Key
Words." They can help you determine just how often people actually search
these words. Keep only the most popular or highly searched words. 4) Search
the "Key Words" yourself. There is no point in trying to tweak your page out
to one word only to find that soooooo many other people have too there is no
way for you to compete with 1 billion other sites generated in that search.
Look for the miracle phrase. The break in the clouds. The one no body has
thought of ... but everyone is searching. How? Well, every time you search
and it is truly a good and popular key word, or phrase, but the results
returned contained mostly unrelated sites ... this is the perfect "key Word"
choice. Use this and any like it to place into your Title, Header, Meta Tags
and the like. They should however be tailored to each individual pages needs.

Meta Tags, Header etc.
Meta Tags, the Header, Title, Key Word, Descriptive Tags and such can be
found at the top of a page, when viewed in Raw or Naked HTML code. This chunk
of input is invisible on the viewers side, and is only viewable in pure HTML
source. This is the reason for the magic behind it. Search engines are
capable of reading this information, and do. This top section of a page
largely determines how a page will be placed in a search.
To find where to place you Key Words, open up your page in an HTML editor.
Open the page as HTML only. It should have no pictures and many colored text.
At the top you will see input that says <"META NAME"> , <"HEADER"> ,
<"TITLE"> or something like this. If you can see that, then you've found
them! In the space that follows you will see another site of words which may
resemble this <"DESCRIPTIVE WORDS"> or <"DESCRIPTION">. this is where you
substitute the input with your key words.
The words you use for this section should be formulated using the Key Word
you chose earlier. Key words should also be placed in the "Key Word" Tag of
your page. Key Words should be used in the Header, Title etc. Use the Key
Words in the body text of your page to begin paragraphs whenever possible. Do
not flood your page, however. Search engines prefer about 7 repetitions of
Key Words, in the body, on the average.
Specialize each page in your web.
Different pages in your domain cover different topics. Use that to its'
fullest potential. If you carefully choose descriptive Key Words, that are
highly searched, for individual pages, you can turn each page into its own
high ranking, viewer magnet. Capture the essence of each separate page.
For example: Say the individual page is for a product, use the name, uses /
its' trendiness to describe your product in the Key word, Meta Tag, Title,
etc., of your page, with words specific to this particular page. The results?
When people search virtually any aspect of your domain, they will find you.
They will also be able to find you through more searches. And this means more
chances of getting hits. This is especially good for large domains. But even
the smallest site can get extra needed attention by making their pages search
engine ready.
A good source for key words can be your highest ranking competitor. To see
their key words, simply goto the page (of theirs) that you want to know the
keywords to. Go to the top of your browser where you will find a button
called View. Click View, from the drop-down menu choose View Source, Or
Source Code, or something to this effect. The page displayed will be in Raw
HTML. Look towards the top where you will see name like Meta Tag, or Meta
Name, etc. And there they are. For you to see.

Links
Make sure all of your pages are somehow linked to one another. This is
vital for search engines to encompass the entire domain. Any unlinked pages
will not be indexed (as good as never making it know to the engine). You can
even add invisible GIFs with all the links, or written small in the color of
you background, what ever. Just put it there.

Submitting
Now you can submit your pages. I would go here to do it. But if not, try to
find a free service / low cost service that either manually submits each
page, or has a method which make pages appear manually submitted. Search
engines prefer manual submissions.
To keep your page scoring well with the engines, submit often once or twice
a month should be enough. Over submitting can cause your page to be dropped
or penalized for Spamming.

Headline read, "Scam-Free Work at Home Jobs! No Experience Necessary! Act now!"

That got me thinking, how many people actually fall for these ads? You know those blatant, in-your-face ads with claims that can\'t be true and "call to actions" that force you to stop whatever you\'re doing to give full attention to this "once-in-a-lifetime offer."

Let me ask you. Have you ever forked out money for something that sounded like a good product or service to someone who seemed like a ni
e person and avoided that nagging voice in your head that said, "Sounds too good to be true!?"

You did?

Then what happened? Let me guess. You get the product. It\'s not even close to what was described, doesn\'t do half of what the expert testimonials claimed it would. And, you know that 100% money-back guarantee? It isn\'t worth a dime when the seller goes AWOL.

Then anxiety rushes in and you realize - scam, internet...I\'ve been had.

I\'ll let you in on a little secret. You\'re not alone. A lot of people fall for those ads...hardworking, sensible people who for the most part aren\'t looking to become millionaires. They just want a little slice of their own pie, to take control of their life and provide a comfortable lifestyle for their family.

But the truth is, people do fall for the ads. That\'s why scammers keep running them. And people keep falling for them. And admittedly, I\'ve fallen for them myself.

Let\'s see, there was that home business membership site that was pitched to make you millions and when I finally got the chance to peek inside (after forking over more than a $1000), there was nothing there. No articles, no content, nada...in fact the only thing that was there was an affiliate link to sign up other suckers like me.

And then there was the year-long "search engine domination" service using Web 2.0 methods, promising never-before released marketing techniques and new content added to the site throughout the year. Sure, there was content added to this "bare bones" website, but much of it was generated by users trying out the techniques. Occasionally, there was a lame "inspirational" 5 minute audio clip recorded in the guru\'s car as he was off to put together another deal. Oh, brother. But I should have known something was up when during that first mastermind the "guru" explained call protocol...absolutely no negative comments or the call would end immediately.

How stupid could I be? Turns out, pretty stupid. It wasn\'t enough that I wasted $1500 on this pathetic excuse for a mastermind program, but what really took the cake was when he took an additional $500 from my PayPal account (which I later recovered).

And then there\'s the countless other home business programs stacked up in my office, doing nothing but gathering dust.

So what have I learned over the years that will keep you from becoming a victim to another online home business scam? What can you do to ensure that the next work at home job opportunities pitch is scam-free?

Scam-free Work at Home Jobs Checklist

1. Get to know the Seller

If you\'re unfamiliar with the group that\'s pitching the business opportunity or work at home job, make sure you do some online research. Using your favorite search engine, type in the name of the seller and see what results come back. You can also type in the seller\'s name plus the word "feedback." Visit forums and blogs in the related industry. Post questions. Ask webmasters. Typically, people are more than happy to provide advice and feedback.

2. Verify Contact Information

Look for a contact link in the navigation menu or in the footer. Legitimate companies have links to real contact information including an email address, business address and phone number. Is there an email address; what kind is it? Be careful if it is a gmail, yahoo, hotmail or other free email account. Legitimate companies usually have their own domain (e.g., businessname.com) though it is no guarantee of legitimacy.

3. Know What You\'re Getting

Request a sneak peek of what you\'re buying. If it\'s an information product, ask to see a sample. If it\'s an ebook, ask for the table of contents. If it\'s an online service or software, maybe there\'s a demo, a trial, or a video review.

4. Pay Using Installments

Frequently more expensive products offer the option of paying with installments. If you\'re unfamiliar with what you\'re buying or from whom you are buying, always choose this option. Although you may end up paying a bit more than the one payment price, it gives you the chance of seeing what you\'re buying, before you risk the entire amount on a product that doesn\'t measure up.

5. Effectively Manage PayPal Subscriptions

If you\'re paying by installments and using PayPal, make sure you cancel the subscription after the final installment. If not, this leaves you open to the risk of unauthorized additional installments taken from your account.

6. Don\'t Use PayPal if Unfamiliar With the Seller or Service

The dispute process is always much easier and the outcome usually much better when you dispute charges with credit card companies vs. PayPal. I don\'t know why. Maybe it\'s because credit card companies have been at it longer; the process is predictable, straightforward. Although PayPal is a great service, this is definitely an area where it needs to improve.

7. Contact When Seller is Unresponsive to Your Complaints

* Better Business Bureau - http://bbb.org

* USPS Fraud Inspection Service - http://www.usps.com/postalinspectors/fraud/

* Federal Trade Commission - http://ftc.gov

If you\'re unable to find the seller\'s contact information (which you\'ll need to file a report with the above agencies), try your PayPal receipt or call PayPal directly, search the WhoIs Lookup (which provides information on domain ownership), review emails you might have received from the guru, or search for the seller\'s name using your favorite search engine.

The #1 guaranteed way of never becoming a victim to a job or business opportunity scam again - know from whom you are buying. Have you ever been intimidated at the convoluted, jargon-ridden information about Internet marketing available on the Net? What exactly is search engine optimization anyway, and can I do it myself?

Often it results in many companies becoming confused and therefore reluctant to put into practice what would be a valuable and simple business resource when understood and applied correctly.

Market Researcher and Internet marketing consultant, Gordon Goodfellow, who is also an
English literature graduate, decided it was time for
change. Part of this desire to make web marketing more accessible was due to his past experience as a teacher.

"I was sick of all the gobbledygook that surrounds web site promotion and web marketing, even today," he explains. "Website marketing isn't rocket science and should not be presented as such. Everyone should have access to affordable website promotion."

Having spent four years researching and assessing the best way of getting an effective message across on the Internet, he began to design a basic introduction to Internet marketing. The result of this hard work is Applied Web Marketing. AWM is a comprehensive beginner's guide to marketing on the Internet, covering everything from domain names, through search engine optimisation, search engine ranking and search engine promotion, to e-commerce and merchant accounts (and their alternatives), all
refreshingly written in plain English.

The guide also has useful links to many resources, and to the submission pages of the major search engines and directories, making it an unmissable companion to those seeking affordable Internet promotion for their own web sites.

The reaction to this new venture has been swift and positive. In the few months Applied Web Marketing has been available online, many influential names have given their approval and thanks. Both the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and Goodfellow's local MP have been in contact. Stephen Timms MP, Minister for E-Commerce, wrote that "it looks like a very useful resource...I wish you well with this very interesting and relevant offering."

Applied Web Marketing is free to access at www.Applied-Web-Marketing.com and is also downloadable as a free ebook from the site.

Keyword Density is a very important area if you want to get your website highly ranked in the Search Engines. So, what is Keyword Density and how can it be calculated?

Keyword Density is the ratio between the total number of words contained on a web page and the total number of times a particular keyword is used. It usually varies among Search Engines but it should be in the range of 2-8% for that specific keyword. However, 4-5% works best in this day and age.

Here are some suggestions on how to place your keywords on your webs
te to make your Keyword Density be more favorable for Search Engines:

  • Place the most important keywords at or near the start of the web page. You should also try to begin your sentences with a keyword as well as have the main keyword in your Title. However, sometimes this isn't possible, so if the keyword doesn't flow in the sentence, just add it somewhere else on the webpage.
  • Do not put the same keyword into your web page repeatedly just to increase your Keyword Density or you can be accused of spamming. Your web page and even your website may be rejected and even be banned by the Search Engines for this offence. On the other hand, a Keyword Density that is too low will not lead to high ranking on the Search Engine.
  • If the Keyword Density Ratio isn't around 5%, don't worry. The most important thing is to have good, clear content that reads easily and makes sense. Some people actually add extra small paragraphs with added keywords to obtain the proper Ratio. This can be a good thing if it's good content that they add because Search Engines love new, good content.
  • Avoid using the keyword twice in the same sentence. It usually just makes the sentence very confusing and not free flowing. Remember, there are other, better places on your web page where keywords can be placed to increase your Keyword Density.

Keyword Density is an important parameter for your web page or article. If your's is too high or even too low, it could have a big effect on getting a high ranking on a Search Engine.

You need to know the tricks of the trade to make money online. Here's an in-depth look at how you can do just that!

The exponential growth of the internet in recent years has thrown open a number of opportunities for entrepreneurs to make money online. Between the year 2000 and 2008, the world has seen a near 300% growth in the number of internet users around the world. The Asian continent leads the pack in this growth story with China claiming 210 million users, Japan about 88 million users and India 60 milli
n users. These are figures are as of December 2007 and are still growing. What does this growth mean to you and me?

Seamless business

When we discuss making money online, freelancing is the quickest and easiest route to make money online. Whether you are a software programmer, web designer, copywriter, SEO expert, Market Researcher or engaged in almost any profession or calling, there is an opportunity available to you. To make a beginning, you can open the home page of any search engine and key in the words make money online. You will be surprised by the number of search results which pops up in a few seconds.

Your role

So, you have found all those web sites which promise to hold your hand and take you straight to the bank vault. Well, to make money online, you need to have some product, skill sets, or great amount of knowledge in one or more related areas. If, in the process of your effort, someone promises to take you to the bank vault straight, ignore him. In addition to opportunities directly related to your profession, skill, or merchandise there are other opportunities too. Paid surveys, mystery shopping, network marketing/multi level marketing etc. is only representative samples of the different opportunities.

Getting started

Now that you have a bird's eye view of making money online, it is time to get started. Instead of trying to grab at all those opportunities (remember, there will be hundreds of web-sites promising you the riches) in one go, you should analyze several of them and select a specific niche where your product or skills can be best employed. Once the niche is identified, narrow down your search to that niche and study each and every offer meticulously. Understand precisely, the inputs that these web-sites need from you to get started, if there is an entry fee what the quantum is and how you pay that, does it require you to furnish your credit card details (it is best to avoid such sites) etc. For example, you may be an expert in sourcing antique goods or even specific range of goods within that category. Incorporate this expertise into your search and study the offerings under that head.

The drivers

You are almost ready to launch into your new occupation – making money online. Like in any business, profession, or calling, there are certain fundamental parameters which will drive your business to success. In nearly 100% instances of making money online, every bit of the act is done through the internet and the buyer and seller seldom have any physical acquaintance. The two parties can be as distanced as several thousand miles or as close as your backyard. Honesty, integrity and punctuality therefore become the major drivers or the operative words.

Many new business owners become completely focused on designing their website, promoting their company or attracting new customers. However, they may fail to recognise the importance of maintaining up-to-date website statistics. These statistics provide you with key performance indicators that let you know if you are doing well or if there are areas where you need to improve or make major changes. If you don't have access to this vital information, you will continue to advance blindly with your new business venture. The end result - you
ay end up failing before you know it.
Available Statistical Tools & Resources
Fortunately, maintaining accurate website statistics is now easier than ever. Many innovative and helpful tools and software exist to help you with this task. You can purchase software that is usually relatively inexpensive and complete this task yourself. You may choose to assign this responsibility to your web designer or another trusted individual. The most important thing is to actually perform the task on a regular basis. It's great that your business did very well 4 months ago, but is it doing just as well this month? If you don't know, you should and detailed website statistics will let you know instantly.
Benefits of Website Statistical Analysis
Website statistics will also show you if any changes you have recently made are proving successful or not. This way you can decide whether to continue as usual or make further changes. There is no point repeating the same mistake over and over again. If you don't continuously monitor the effect of the changes, you will never know how well you are doing.
This also ensures you're obtaining optimal results for your advertising or marketing budget. for visit to:- www.web-audios-plus.com You may think that spending a lot of money to advertise with a certain company is a brilliant idea. However, will you think the same way when you check your website statistics and realise that your advertising dollars have not produced one single visitor from the company's marketing efforts. Absolutely not! On the other hand, you may be surprised to discover that one of your less expensive marketing strategies has produced very successful results.
Important Elements to Include in Your Analysis
You may think that the only number you need to be concerned about is the total number of people who visit your site every month. Well, this is not the case as you require additional information to perform a sufficient analysis.
Here are some elements you should ensure are included in the website statistics for your business:
Unique Visitors: This refers to the number of actual visitors to your site, not just friends or family members who check your site several times a day. The term hits is often used be paid advertisement or affiliate sites, but it can be very misleading and inaccurate. The number of hits on your site may be very impressive, but don't get too excited; many of these may actually be files such as movies and images. You need to concentrate on the number of actual visitors to your website.
Referring Search Engines: This statistic indicates the number of pages that were visited when someone clicked on a search engine link. Google, Yahoo! and MSN are currently the three largest search engines, but many others may generate a large percentage of online traffic to your website. By reviewing which search engines refer the most visitors to your site, you can ensure your ranking or search engine result position (SERP) does not diminish with them.
Other Referring Sites: This will help you determine what percentage of referring sites is actually spam. You will notice some legitimate sites from actual sites and clients. If you don't run any affiliate programs or pay-per-click ads, these statistics may not be as important. However, if you pay for advertising on any external sites, make sure to pay close attention to these numbers.
Entry & Exit Pages: These statistics reveal exactly where your visitors entered and where they left your website. more visit to :-www.video-web-wizards.com
This will give you a clearer idea whether they actually found what they were searching for or if they immediately exited your site after taking a quick look. In the latter case, you may want to ensure your website looks attractive and professional and is easy to navigate. Your contact page is generally one of the most desirable exit pages because it indicates that visitors want to obtain additional information about your company.
Keywords/Keyword Phrases: This type of statistics will show you exactly what visitors were searching for when they ended up on your website. If you discover some keywords that continue to rank highly, you may want to consider changing some of the content on your website. You can also include some of the more popular keywords or key phrases in the Meta tags you use for your titles, domain names and descriptions.
Error Pages: No one likes to arrive at a web page to be greeted with a dreaded 404 error message. This applies to your visitors as well so make sure you continuously check if any of your pages are creating errors. If so, fix them immediately before you begin to damage your reputation and lose valuable customers!
Monitoring website statistics is not as complicated as you may think, but it is extremely important. You can hire someone to help you or purchase software and do it yourself. By regularly monitoring various elements of your online traffic, you can determine how well your business is doing and whether any changes are warranted. Learning how to properly analyze the numbers on your statistical reports can add up to much higher numbers on your business' monthly bank statements!

In part 1, I said that a theme-based website is a site based
on a single theme or concept. Every page of the site
concentrates on a single topic that is related to the theme.
Each page delivers great content on it's topic. We know
this type of site scores with the search engines because
it adds value to their search results. It also scores with
visitors who are finding the valuable information they were
looking for. And it scores for the merchants you represent
because it will deliver ready to buy visitors to the
r
sites. And, of course, you score with big commission checks.

I'm ready to build a theme-based site. What do I do first?
Choose a theme, of course! For some, this may be very
easy. But, some of us might not have the slightest idea
what we could offer that would be of value to others.
Let's brainstorm a bit. Are you an expert in your field
with lots of information to share? Do you have a hobby
that you're passionate about? A favorite subject you love
to read about? Work experience from a current or previous
job? Think about your strengths. What do others come to
you for? Do you, or could you, offer a service? Ask your
friends and relatives. Others may see something that is
not so obvious to you. Don't make the mistake of thinking
your theme must be something "big" and "important".
Believe me, many more people are looking for information on
"fly fishing" than "rocket science"!

Once you have an idea (or two!) for a theme it's time to
think about related topics. Remember, your site is going
to consist of pages that offer content, each on a specific
topic that is related to your theme. Back to the example
of my "Italian cooking" theme. Possible topics included
"Italian chefs", "Italian specialty foods", "Italian
cooking methods", Italian cookware", etc. I want as many
related topics as I can find. I want to build a
substantial site, offering my visitors what they are
looking for, lots of valuable content. And lets not forget
the search engines. I want to be sure their spiders are
finding lots of related keywords so that I'm ranked high in
their search results.

Now, I can come up with some topics off the top of my
head. But I've only thought of a few, and how do I know if
these are topics that people will actually search for on
the Net? Luckily there are ways to discover both new ideas
for topics AND if people are going to find you by searching
for them. What I'm going to do is use a "keyword research"
tool. These can be found at some of the engines like
Overture or 7Search. Some pay-per-click advertising
providers also have a keyword search tool, like Brainfox
and Google's Adwords. If I use SiteBuildIt! to build
my site, I have the Manager which does all the keyword
searching and brainstorming for me, as well as showing
profitability for each keyword. (You can see screenshots of
the Manager in action by downloading the free SBI! Make Your
SitePresell.. http://freetrial.sitesell.com/assist3.html ).

A keyword search should give me lots of ideas for related
topics for my theme. OK, it threw up some weird,
totally unrelated stuff, too, but I'll just ignore that.
What I want are keywords that suggest a topic that I can
write (or find) valuable content about. For example, my
search on "Italian cooking" brought up "lowfat cooking".
Hmm, hadn't thought of that, but a lot of Italian recipes
are low in fat, so perhaps I'll write a page on this topic.
This is called a keyword-focused page, and once I have 10
or 20 of these, I know that anyone searching for these and
related keywords is going to find my site.

Great, I've got a site based on a theme that I know about
and/or interests me. (If we're talking Italian cooking,
we're talking PASSION!) I've packed it with valuable
content on topics closely related to my theme. My visitors
are going to love it, as are the search engines. But,
well..... what about me?

Oh, did I forget? I do love Italian cooking, but I'm
building this theme-based website to earn income. So, at
least some of my pages will offer valuable content that
is also designed to presell. Presell what? Any product,
program or service that I represent as an affiliate. Of
course, the product, program or service needs to "fit" with
the content and the theme of my site. My "Italian cooking"
site will include a page on "lowfat Italian cooking".
Within my valuable content, I will recommend a favorite
cookbook on lowfat Italian cooking and provide an in-text
link to a bookseller who will then sell that book to my
visitor. Content on Italian wine will link to a merchant
where my visitor can mail-order Italian wines. Etc, etc.

How do I find the products, programs and services I want
to represent? That is the topic of Part 3 of this series.
Trouble coming up with a theme? Maybe I can help.

What Makes a Great Headline?

Headlines are far more important than the copy beneath them. If you don't use headlines within your chapter, on your web home page, or in your web s
te sales letters and article titles, you will lose your audience's attention in a few seconds. And, that's serious.

Apply These Top Ten Headline Ideas and Prosper

Your Headline...

1. Needs to compel and propel the skimmer to stay and go to sales copy beneath if on your web site. Your book chapter headlines should lead your reader by the hand to what he wants to know. They can be questions or statements, but make them clear, and if possible make them sizzle.

2. Must be attention-getting. Use emotion in your copywriting because people buy because they connect emotionally, not because they need something.

3. Make it benefit-driven--how your product or service will solve your audience's problem, concern, or challenge.

4. Make an irresistible offer. Most eBooks that sell well offer special bonus reports they attach at the end of the document. People often buy just because of the bonus such as "How to Get Testimonials from the Rich and Famous" for a book on writing a book.

5. Make a wild promise and pay up. Most people don't like hype, but will notice your promises in your benefit statements. Back it up with the how with the copy beneath the headline.

6. Keep it simple. Some headlines go on and on to include many problems and benefits. Stick to a few lines for the best results.

7. Include one top benefit. The top headline of your web or email sales letter should taut your number one benefit of your product or service. Show the big result and wow your readers. They are looking for answers.

8. Build curiosity/suspense. Would this attract you? "Overcome Writers' Block with Snake Dancing?" Sometimes the improbable can hook your readers attention, and that's what you want.

9. Must be "you" centered.

Instead of saying "I can do this for you" write it "You will get this benefit when you..." Check out your home page. Does it need a lift? If it has a lot about you, your mission, and your bio, you have missed the mark.

10. Think before you write your headlines. Leave the lackluster ones behind. To announce his seminars, one client put "Upcoming Seminars" in the email subject line. Who cares? Entice your market to act by making a specific, benefit-driven headline.

To prepare for great headlines, start with a list of great benefits for each product and service. Before you post, check with associates for their reactions. They are a sample of the groups and individuals you want to attract. It's always good to get a writing coach to check your headlines before you post them.
